Thread: Superman..

  1. #1

    Default Superman..

Playing on VH/VH with Carthage, my small army set off to attack a Greek General. 3 Iberian Infantry and 3 round shield cav on my side, and 1 general unit on the greek's. His general unit charges my infantry head on, and manages to rout 2 of the units on contact. I charge my cav, and my whole army routs.. What's gone wrong here?

Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."

Since the first two routed the others would take a morale blowe seeing their allies rout. If you're going to take on a General unit with such weak units, make sure to surround him. If possible, use your cavalry to charge where the actual general is located. It may kill him faster.

Look at your difficulty setting. On Very Hard the AI gets unbelievable boni to their stats. Iberian Infantry aren´t the world´s greates fighters to begin with, and receiving a charge from a powered-up gerneral unit... well, it´s hardly a surprise. The second unit saw the first routing, that pulled down morale further.

It is because of the VH difficulty setting, but ehmm I outnumbered the enemy around 5:1.. Anyway, the only way that seems to counter this early on is to have my general fight him and flank. But this is annoying, as I don't have that many family members. Though, don't you think that instead of VH Battle difficulty giving unbelievable bonuses to the A.I, it should give tactical bonuses?

I always use my bodyguards. Make sure to make 'em draw their swords, though. You'll get unlucky and lose a good general like one out of twenty times or something. Happened to me the other day. Only good general fighting in Gaul alone, as the Julii. I made him charge a warband, and the instant the two units touched, he died. Heh.

Well, that would be the ideal world, sadly the world is anything but.
That´s why I keep fighting my battles on Medium difficulty, that way no side gets any boni.

I do the same, in MTW I fought on Hard but the bonuses are too dodgy in Rome.

Same here, on Medium. Things just get too weird and unbelieveable on Hard, and it breaks the immersion. If I want a more challenging battle, I just keep my stacks under-strength and try to fight larger armies. At least it looks right.

The plural of bonus is bonuses, not boni.

Yeah, I stay on VH\H because VH\VH just gets really, really crazy at times. It's certainly winnable, but it's just not fun.

Wrong, "bonus" is adapted from Latin, therefore the correct plural is "boni".

Well, it at least gives a challenge. I play all mine on VH/VH, even though it makes it desperate with some factions <--- You just can't assault a roman city..

Even on M/M Iberian Infantry are complete pansies that run if anyone looks at them funny; Carthaginian cavalry tend to rout if you tell them to attack something other than what they want to attack. So it's no wonder things went kerflooey on VH/VH.

Yes if you talk Latin or German... but I cannot find the word boni in my English dictionary (online).
Too bad, I would have made the same use of the plural as you did.

Apart of any changes of stats due the difficult settings, it works best to let cheap units stand in a deep formation when facing an superior enemy calvalry unit. Same with light cavalry, which I suggest to use in wedge formations....

The plural used today is bonuses but we English don't like "ses" at the end of a word, so boni is likely more gramatically correct.

Looking at it the other way round, facing a stack of 3 Ibs and 3 round shield cav with a half decent general I would expect to win so long as the Carthaginians can be opened out a bit and I could take them a unit at a time... None of those units alone will do much damage to a bodyguard unit.

People on the internet try and latinise every word they can. Believe me, the plural of "bonus" is "bonuses".

Go to Google, put in "define: boni" and then put in "define: bonuses". One just happens to give better results..

    Interesting..

I always play on either VH/H (Strong factions) or H/H (Weaker factions).

Just because the majority uses one way of spelling doesn´t make it any more correct. I had to learn Latin at school, by the way.

I don't see any way we can resolve this, so I say we let the thread return to it's original course.

You can have your plural; I'll have mine.

Yes, but the 3 infantry units from front along with a flank charge with the other 3 cav should kill that unit.

Personally, I'm no good at RTW, especially not when on VH. I don't know how this could happen, but it's possible, the general was the faction leader. Maybe he had some terrain advantages? Your cavalry would probably be attributed to the fact your other units routed.

May I inquire as to why you even sent infantry in? Some say I rely on cavalry a little too much, but you could have just swarmed him with Round Shields...

Incorrect... just because you're English it doesn't mean that boni is correct. Would you say "foci" as the plural of focus too? No you wouldn't. The plural is "focuses" and that's in English too, and grammatically correct.
I'm English, and believe me, if you went into a pub and said boni you'd be laughed out of the place. Also, the BBC doesn't use boni either, they use bonuses like the rest of us.
We speak English (which inculdes words like "presses"), not Latin, so I believe that let's use the language that we speak and understand, instead of trying to sound pseudo-intellectual.

Just edited to add the smiley so this didn't sound like I'm having a go, just trying to correct you on what WE British do and don't do.

@Craterus: In VH no they wouldn't. Anyway, I managed to beat it after the second try, as one of you said, I sacrificed 1 of my infantry units by having it loose in front of my forces, the enemy charged it and got stopped, then I charged by whole army. I did have some losses though, but I still managed to beat it.

VH battles are unrealistic, so I don't play them. What's the point of having peasants that are (with the bonuses () ) equal to a unit of Hastati?
But that's for a different thread...
