Thread: Best Final Fantasy

    Default Best Final Fantasy

You've probably seen this type of thread before... but hey, I was just curious to see what the hardcore strategy community thought about the issue.

Well, for me it's definitely NOT IX, X, X2 or XI, and I don't see XII doing well either. Not sure if you all have noticed that the old dark, dreary, post-apocolyptic atmosphere of the old SNES FF just isn't there anymore. Now a days you have these J-Popstar wannabe types that look like they belong in a bad fashion magazine. And the fact that the guys look like girls doesn't help either.

FFVI (or FFIII in the US) was the best experience for me. FFVII was close, very close, but in the end the characters and darkness level in FFVI beats it out.

I have not played the first 4 FF, but I've been told that FFIV was VERY good, can anyone vouch for this?

Eh, at the time, 4 was a good game, but it's not like it was up against bucketloads of competition back then.

Anyway, at the time, I probably enjoyed 6 the most, followed by 8, then 4. These days, I couldn't stand to sit through 15 minutes of any of them without an emulator "HURRY UP ALREADY!" button and a bottle of scotch. And if it was 7, I'd need three bottles of scotch.

of 4-8 (the ones I've played), I'd say 7. 8 was the reason I stopped playing them (well, that and the PS2)

I've played IV, VI, VII, VIII, X, X-2 and I like VI the best. Certainly, you always remember your first time and I played VI and X at the same time and I just liked how quaint VI seemed, and the large number of likeable characters. And the soundtrack is my favorite of all time.

VII and VIII are two of my favourite games of all time. I can't really decide between them.

VII is also one of my all time favourite games too.

The 30 minute ending sequence was just legendary.

Did anyone ever wait through the credits to see the cut scene of old Red in the future...brilliant.

VII, there can't be any doubt in that.

INEZ: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
GARCIN: I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to - to do my deeds.
INEZ: One always dies too soon - or too late. And yet one's whole life is complete at that moment, with a line drawn neatly under it, ready for the summing up. You are - your life, and nothing else.

I love VIII and VII. I like X. I loved parts of IX, but too much of the rest was either extremely boring or totally daft.

X I think, though it get a bit tedious towards the end. Endboss was pretty hard and you had to sit trough a very long movie with every try.

VII was fantastic, and there is a movie sequel to it which I do not have a copy of on my computer in japanese (English subtitles).

VIII and IX were excellent too, but occassionally can be quite tedious.

X was a bit of a disappointment, though X-2 was good as an individual game (though as a Final Fantasy it was off-putting)

I found the sphere-grid business somewhat tedious -- all that time accumulating sphere-levels and spending 15 mins on a bleak screen spending them and having to be careful not to get stuck in some dead end. And then the characters can all end up just the same eventually...

VII was great, except for the anal sex part. Don't ask me how I found that out.

I like it, because it's got the down times and up times, so that you can relax a little during the game. I found myself becoming happy when times of peace for a while were upon me.

Oh yes, the FF8 system was its greatest downfall. It has nice pictures and tunes, and plot, and fighting, and some aspects of the GF system aren't too bad, but the whole magic thing and ability slots and such were disappointing...

The graphics shouldn't rate on a game, considering they generally improve as time goes by. The myriad cinematic scenes and voices (oh, the voices) were great. The world was certainly coherent, the plot slightly less so (not as confusing as FFVII, mind). The combat system was lacking in individuality and ingenuity, I feel. Somewhat basic (except the wonderful Aeons).

You have a list telling you who gets to go when. I rather like that, makes for more strategerie, at least in the Shadow Hearts games, when you need to think. FF X required some time to deal with the far too frequent random encounters, and then you would be fine at bosses. Just hit attack. Maybe a cure spell here or there (which sucks because then you have to bring the Target [aka Yuna] into the game to get crushed because of her inability to take a hit).

And yes, the plot was very coherent. "Sin is bad m'kay, Sin is bad." Sounds like a midwestern fire-and-brimstone preacher. Something about a father that didn't matter, and self-sacrifice (which would have been really cool!) being avoided because Tightass can whine. I'm still not sure what that giant tick thingy was... but it didn't matter. You have to kill Sin. Plot at the start, middle, and end of the game. There was something random about another boss that is just thrown in for good measure (ala FF VIII), but that thing didn't matter either. I have to love those twists!

Make no mistake, I don't hate FF X, I just don't like it. Maybe XII will be better, I don't know. But I still love the series.
