Default VI players do you ever ........

    Dear VI players,

Dont you ever think that by having so many damn Mods (DUX, NTW and any others) that you are actually discouraging other players from moving over from Medieval or even first time players.

Its so frustrating to join the room (as someone who cant host) to find that there are 3 or more games up that have version conflicts and there is no one left to play! While these mods are im sure great would it not be more beneficial to play normal games and even maps (altogh they are easy to get) while there are so few players on VI and therefore encourage others to join?

How about you get some normal games on the go when theres only a few people on!!

    PS

    First things first...
You can download it easily from http://mizus.com/dux
It has an auto-installer, so you only need to specify your VI-folder when it prompts you to do so. As I can safely assume that you have also MTW installed, mistaking the VI folder for the MTW is possible and may cause complications. So make sure you choose the right one;)

    About your other question.
Different people have different desires and goals. I have come to believe that the majority of intelligent forms of life in our world (although there are many exceptions as expected) seeks to satisfy their vital needs in an environment where competition due to scarcity of resources works to their detriment. When someone has the option of following a course of action that will work in their perceived benefit without disproportional negative consequences in a foreseeable future, then there's no reason at all to assume that he'll choose a different one.

By taking a tiny leap from here, it's quite easy to see why people play mods. They consider the value of time spent playing X mod to be more rewarding than VI or anything else for that matter. This can be explained by attempting to determine individual motives, something that can be turned into a simple abstraction, where you have an x,y,z axis, whereas x= gameplay, y= social contacts, z= available time, each variable representing a motive or parameter that is valued to a greater or lesser degree before choosing the way you wish to play (works better as a zero-sum model).
If x>y, therefore we see someone willing to limit the games he's having with friends/acquaintances in order to play, say, a mod/era/florin level/rules he deems that offer the most fun, satisfaction, tactical challenge etc. Or you could take the case of z>y>x, where a person values his time the most and is willing to compromise the number of games with friends (as, generally speaking, he'd might have to wait more to get a game with all the people he' d otherwise wanted if he had more time), and has even less qualms about joining a 99k game, even though he isn't particularly fond of them.

There are, somewhat rare, occasions where parameter x is obviously valued more than y and z, so in this case you' re refusing to play something that isn't worth your time at all, so it's either a certain type game or none at all. If there is a general consensus about what comprises a good gameplay, you can see it becoming the standard, that will be gradually adopted by the majority.

Or we could scrap the whole model and say that usually people with mods play after having made arrangements or having spread the word up to a point where there's a reasonable chance of having a good 1v1 or 2v2 than one boring 4v4:P
As I 've said before, no ones forcing anyone to play anything, or even play at all. Mods are usually available for free and cater to an audience that is born out of dissent and dissatisfaction (or just plain bored) with the current state of things, something like the party-creation process ...

Hope that this answers any questions regarding mods in a definitive way.

the mods are fun, that's why folks play them. the vi community is a bit older than the folks playing mtw and moving over to vi, so they've, in many cases exhausted the vi gameplay. some have gone so far as to impose limits on morale upgrades and the like. the mods offer a bit more balance than the game ca gave, depending on your opinion, and many of the old old vets enjoy meeting up with old friends in a competative, yet friendly atmosphere.

i see plenty of regular vi games hosted though, just with lotsa cash nowadays.

It's a dynamic progression through the gameplaying experience. Different players are at different stages of that progression, and many people have passed all the way through standard VI. I got to the end of VI 18 months ago, and stopped playing. The mods are an extension of the game which offer a more advanced gameplay than the standard game. When DUX came out, I started playing again. The gameplay is interesting enough to keep me coming back. Standard VI is not interesting enough to me, and raising the money to 48k to 88k essentially removes morale as a factor which makes it even less interesting.

DUX is the logical extension of VI. It plays like VI, but essentially removes the imbalance in the armies purchased so that how you use the army determines the outcome not what you bought. It also balances the units so that their capability is proportional to their cost, and they work properly within an RPS system. To maintain the balance, you have to play at the designed money level of 10k, and use no upgrades.

Currently, none that I'm aware of. Buu maybe knows more about, but surely in a few days time we' ll be able to work more on the mod pages and updating the old links and files that are hosted in other sites.
