I can't remember who said it to me, but if England had a Texas - it'd be Yorkshire. Therefore, I have to side with Texas. Plus I know many cool people from Texas, but the French tend to be quite anti-English, especially English farmers, so they get no support from me.

    Parisians?

I think I have read somewhere that a historian believed that one of the celtic tribes of the Isles might have orginially came from parts of Europe that now contains France.
O well, seems like 'some' people decide to ruin a perfectly valid threat. Nice going guys... doc bean

I went a very different way on this one. Both places have natural splendor. Both have culinary delights. Both provide additions to the cultural base of humanity. It'd be jingoistic to make a choice along these lines. Both even make good wine, though the French were doing it centuries before there even was a Texas.

So instead, I let the little head do the thinkin for the big one, and as usual, I got the right answer:

France: Sophie Marceau, Isabelle Adjani, Julie Delpy

Texas: Eva Longoria, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jennifer Garner

While Texas has the overall hottest babe of them all (Jennifer Love Hewitt and her amazing mammaries), France's top 3 wins over Texas's.

Hoi, I'm not having that!!!! Texans are big, brash and arrogant....and Tykes are big, brash and arroga....err ok I concede.
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

The Republic of Yorkshire and Texas... could it possibly be the most pefect nation ever formed?

Celts/Gauls are believed to have originated in the Upper Danube area of Central Europe (ie Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Czech). The advance of Halstatt and La Tene culture Celts can be traced across Europe from c.700 BC. Their western advance came to a halt in Spain, hence the Celt-Iberians, and other Iberian peoples proper. Maybe the Basques, Picts, Portuguese even, were descendents of these non-Gallic tribes. The Celts seem to have been the first 'Imperialists' of Europe.

Come on, Brenus. I think his history has shown him there have been, erm, brief instances of mild antagonism between France and England.

Well, yeah, but the problem was his instinct was wrong. He probably had French ancestors; at least a lot of English Kings were French. Edward III, grand son of Philippe IV Le Bel, to start with… Louis VIII son of Phillip was the last real French King of England. However, all the Plantagenet dynasty was from French origin (Anjou and Normandie, in French and the text) and even the end of the bad bad Richard III was largely due to the fact that his victor Henri Tudor came and landed (from France) with a French contingent. So, the minor incidents which separated English and French during few centuries and several wars are just family quarrels and shouldn’t be mentioned….

But then along came the Germans, whom both could hate instead.

You know, Finland and Sweden are probably the exact only two neighboring states on the whole subcontinent who haven't been in a war with each other - and *that* may just be because Finland hasn't been around all that long...

I dislike the French because they believe their culture is the best the world has ever seen. Obviously havn't been to Fulham or Hammersmith on a Saturday Night.

Gah, Sweden went on a crusade to baptize Finnish Pagans and rebaptize Finnish Christians in the Medieval period. It wasn't Finland then, but still, shows how common love for thy neighbor is

5 years later and I have not seen a more ignorant OP

There's a yellow rose of Texas
That I am going to see
    No other soldier knows her
    No soldier, only me.
She cried so when I left her
It like to broke my heart
And if I ever find her
    We never more will part.
She's the sweetest rose of color
    This soldier ever knew
Her eyes are bright as diamonds
    They sparkle like the dew.
You may talk about your dearest May
    And sing of Rosa Lee
But the Yellow Rose of Texas
    Beats the belles of Tennessee.
Oh, my heart is feeling weary
And my head is hanging low
    I'm goin' back to Georgy
    To find my Uncle Joe.
You may talk about your Beauregard
    And sing of Bobby Lee
But the Gallant Hood of Texas
    He raised Hell in Tennessee.

I can only meet this provocation with the world's first music video, the 1907(!) rendition of the world's most glorious song.

Move over Justin Bieber! (probably a Texan, judging by his looks) This is what rockstars looked like a century ago:

One would play the sound on an accompanying grammophone, synchronised with the movie. The effect was startling to audiences who were barely used to moving images or recorded sound, never mind the combination of the two.

Such are the wonders one could see in Paris. Synchronised music videos - just another great French invention, in the wake of that other great French invention: film itself, which was the result of yet another French invention, the single image, that is, photography.

Images are a decidely French mode of expression. A thousand years of French cultural superiority culminated in French dominance in 19th and 20th century painting, photography and cinéma. To this day French cinéma - virtually alone in Europe - arrogantly pits quality against the Hollywood fastfilm onslaught.

I, now, happen to learn that some very familiar tune was actually a partition of La Marseillaise.

The French also should be appreciated for shooting this with an actor in pyjamas.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.
