Attaleiates on Manzikert?

Carrying off with the off topic... Attaleiates is the Byzantine evolution of Attalos, a name found in classical Greece from even the 4th century BC. The most well known Attaloi are the members of the royal dynasty that ruled the kingdom of Pergamos in Asia Minor during the 3rd and 2nd century BC ("Attalides"). The toponym "Attaleia" comes from the same source. There is an ancient monument in Athens called "Stoa Attalou" (Gallery of Attalos) and it's a building constructed by the first Attalos of Pergamos to gain the favor of the Athenians.
I don't know about Attilio, could come either way.

Since nobody seems to discuss the topic... you are very welcome LEN, I was myself wondering if there is a connection between the Greek Attalos and the name Attila... to no avail though. The name in Greek is very ancient, but there seems no connection with Attila.

I haven't heard of the name before the famous Hun... is there any evidence of prior use? Is the etymology germanic, as suggested (from Ata - what became "vater", see also "father") ??? I am very curious...

Well,in fact Attaleiates is not a byzantine evolution of the name Attalos.
Attalos founded of course Attaleia.
The ending -ates reveals origin. (Sparte/a -Spartiates)
So he s the man from Attaleia.
On the topic...I have one article about him,"Attaleiates the historian of Mantzikert" ,i ll try to find it to answer!
