Thread: problem with script.

  1. #1

    Default problem with script.

Hi! I'm new to this forum, but I had a question about the beta. It looks great, but I can't get it to work. I have the version 7.3a with the hotfix, however when I try to get it to work it crashes. The computer says that there is a problem with the scripting: in data/descr_event_images.txt in line 623 column 1. It says that it has an unknown event string: faction_defeated_by_player. I don't know what the correct script is so I would really appreciate it if someone would tell me what to type in the script. Much help would be appreciated. This mod looks great by the way, and keep up the good work.

If you have never been able to successfully load the campaign even once, this sort of error is something we see due to a corrupted install of RTW, the 1.2 patch, or EB v0.7.2 + 0.7.3a patch or 0.7.3 patch and hotfix.

Ok i've redone everything, but still have the same problem. Could you tell me what its supposed to say on line 623 of teh data/desc_event_images.txt? That would be really helpful. Thanks.

I don't have that information in front of me, but believe me, it won't help you. This message indicates a real problem, one that can't be fixed by a single line of text.

Please describe for me the exact steps you took to install things. Which programs did you install, exactly? Do you have the RTW gold edition, or normal edition? Did you install the manual or automatic 1.2 patch? Did you install the full version of EB, 0.7.2, and then the patch 0.7.3a, or the patch 0.7.3 + the 0.7.3 hotfix?

I am also having the exact same problem. I have normal R:TW installed to 1.2 via the File Front link from this webpage. I then installed eb.0.7.2 then 0.7.4. I've tried it twice now (uninstalling then reinstalling everything) and it shows the title screen for about 10 seconds then crashes to the desktop with the error stating:

Script Error in data/descr_event_images.txt, at line 623, column 1.
    Unknown event string faction_defeated_by_player

Please help, I really want to see and play this mod. I have always been able to play vanilla with no problems and also the latest version of Rome: Total Realism with no problems.

I'm sorry guys, but line 623 is:
    faction_defeated_by_player

I don't know how to help, other than suggesting that when you originally uninstalled RTW to get a fresh install for EB, did you delete the existing RTW directory? Not doing so can lead to nasty problems.

Yes, when I unistalled everything to start fresh, I made sure to remove all traces of R:TW from my system. I guess I just can't play EB, figures, it looked so cool:( Thanks anyway for trying to help.

First of all I assume you are NOT using RTW Gold or Barbarian Invasions. Those are v1.5/1.6 and are currently incompatible with EB. So assuming you are playing with RTW v1.0, let's take it step by step.

    1) Uninstall RTW from your machine (lets start with a clean slate)
    2) Install RTW (vanilla) and start the game to make sure it works. That means you can begin a normal RTW game.
    3) Install the 1.2 patch. Start the game and make sure you see the 1.2 on the start up screen and can begin a normal RTW game.
    4) If you have room on your hard drive, I'd recommend copying the entire 1.2 directory and renaming the copy something like "Rome - EB.72". That way if something gets messed up in the next few steps, you don't have to keep reinstalling RTW, just delete the EB directory and make a new copy.
    5) Install EB v.72. Launch the game from the desktop icon. If it works, move on to step #6. If it crashes download a new EB v.72 (from a different host) and repeat steps 4 & 5.
    6) Install EB v.74 on top of v.72. DO NOT install the "High Priority" icon!! Start the game and make sure you see the EB v.74 on the start up screen. By now it's either working or it crashed. If it crashes, download a new EB v.74 (from a different host) and repeat steps 4, 5, & 6.

Let us know how this goes.

I am starting this process now. I will let you know how it turns out. And, yes, I am using R:TW 1.0, not gold or BI. Thanks for continuing to help.

I saw that you recommended this method to me... and you told me that if #1 and #2 didn't work, then I should go to #3, and here I am...

But the problem is installing the 1.2 patch, I just click "run" and nothing happens. I found out that also, something did happen when I tried to install EB - a shortcut on my desktop popped up with something about bittorrent and EB, so I clicked it, and it said it doesn't know how to open the file, so it gave me two options: use the web service to find a program or select a program. But I don't have bittorrent downloaded on my computer so that's the reason, but anyways, my problem is downloading 1.2.

Best thing to do is grab a new v1.2 patch. This one is available from Activision.
