I'm having trouble deciding on a faction to play as in a new campaign. I just finished a campaign as the greek cities and my choices are limited to the playable factions. Any suggestions?

i strongly recommend Germania or Gaul (if u like barbarian factions)
if u dont like....i recommend you Parthia...because requiers good strategy to apply
I think I'll try germania. I've never played as them before. Thanks for the input.
np,make sure that u kick the britons out of belgica as fast as you can...in 2-3turns...conquer Vicus Gothi, lovosice, and the denmark provence...then build markets, roads to have positive income....recruit axemen in Damme or Mogontiacum because these are the most advanced settlements....and move a army close to Vicus Marcomanni because dacians surely will try to attack you...after these things u can start the real expansion

After I kick britannia of the mainland will they still continue to try and attack me or will they keep to themselves.Originally Posted by Diurpaneus
In my experience, the Britons are very tenacious and keep annoying me after I kick them out of of Samarobriva (sp?). I usually take Londinium because that robs them of their most developed city. Plus Londinium and Samarobriva make a nice trade pair once ports are built in both cities.Originally Posted by Telys The Conqueror

Mod the descr_strat.txt file to allow all factions to be played (apart from the pretty much unplayable SPQR and Rebel factions). Macedon should be similar but with better units imho: stronger cavalry, and the long pikes can destroy Greek hoplites which simply cannot reach them. Oh, and the black/orange colours look nice.

Have you tried playing as Egypt? Good archers there.

I've played as egypt and britannia a couple times. I did like both of their units a lot but, I really dont like using chariots, to much "running amok". Calvary is a little easier to control too.
Only Scythed Chariots can run amok. Other chariots just rout. However, I agree chariots are rather clumsy, and extremely vulnerable when they get bogged down.Originally Posted by Telys The Conqueror

I agree also, but the british chariots do hardly any damage![]()
I assume you are talking about the heavy chariots as the light ones are very deadly (although not as good as a real horse archer unit). The heavy chariot is usefull though, provided you use it with a little care. The chariot unit description is just wrong. They are not cavalry with the staying power of infantry. They have the speed of cavalry, but they are clumsy and even more vulnerable in a fight. The trick is to keep them moving. Don't target an enemy unit, but drive through it and follow up with an infantry charge. Off course, doing this frontally against a formed unit will result in a lot of broken chariots, but a moving unit or one that is facing the other way is very vulnerable.Originally Posted by kburkert

Pontifex Rex explains this rather well in this thread in the guides forum.

Hi there!![]()
Choosing a faction hey?![]()
Well I love all factions in RTW, they're unique in many ways.
In order to choose which faction to play next (cuz 1 campaign takes a long period of time and I definitely want to try all factions) heres what I thought:
There are roughly 4-5 cultures in RTW: Roman, greek, barbarian, "carthage style" and easterners.
So firstly to play as one of the roman families is a must cuz the game is about ROME total war, right?
Then I choose all playable factions after that unplayable (but unlockable)
I choose according to culture, cuz I wanna spice things up. So after I played as romans next I play as one of eastern factions (e.g. Parthia), after that I go north with barbarians (e.g. Germans), then Carthage, after that again one of roman or greek factions and so on.
So this is how I do: firstly try out the most popular factions like romans, seleucids, carthage, egypt, germania, then go for the little ones like armenia, trace etc.
Just my opinion though, what you choose is up to you m8! Good hunting!

I guess you're not an avid EB supporter?

Actually I'm very impressed by EB and totally support the project. There's room for two Total War games in my taste - EB for the immersion and accuracy, vanilla RTW for the gameplay. (I know EB has great gameplay too, but from a different perspective)Originally Posted by Tiberius
