LONGMONT, Colo. (April 1) - Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag - as well as flags from other countries - amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.

"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."

Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.

Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.

"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."

Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."

On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.

"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."

I do like the picture of the confederate flag , how apropriate , flying the flag of people who didn't want to be part of the United States at a protest against people who do want to be part of the United States , and doing it in a place that wasn't a part of the United States at the time , but that as a territory sided with the Union .

Poor guys, I can't live without the flag of my country. I always take it with me to school, to parties, when I go to sleep. I even take it with me in the shower. It's not as if this is a law-it's a school rule. If these incidents were becoming common, and they were disrupting the school's primary purpose of educating people, it seems pretty reasonable to me.

They've banned all flags, so it's fair, at least.

This is nothing new...

Most UK schools (and public institutions in general) tend to take a dim view on people having England flags on display because of it's 'far-right' associations. I was personally told on more than one occassion not to have an England flag and that even a Union Jack was pretty unnacceptable. Scottish flags on the other hand... fine....

How ironic that the nation which stood alone against the forces of the far-right should be told that its national symbol is innappropiate because it is associated with the 'far-right'. Perhaps next they'll tell America to stop celebrating Martin Luther King day because of his associations with white sumpremacy.

Amen. I always admired the way Americans were not ashamed to show their patriotism, but it looks like the PC/BS tide has spread across the Atlantic.

Over heare in NZ I always flaunt my nationality and no one really cares, heck I got a belt buckle with st george on it along with the Sainst flag and the Union J saying "British by Birth, English by the Grace of God". So I'm coming back home next year, should I perhaps change my wardrobe?
