Yeah don't play on very hard if you want realistic battles the AI gets a whole lot of attack and moral bonuses and on top of that the EB AI generals get huge command star bonuses making it dam near impossible to get anyone routing until his dead.

Personally I play on medium battle difficulty seems to feel right just attack with a smaller force than the defender and its a real challenge.

Yeah, all enemy units are overpowered on VH, there are a bunch of +7 stat bonues.

Play medium and a unit of triarii and then hammer and anvil should rout it.

Is it a challenge on medium? How large are your armies?

If playing on Medium, you should have either half stack or a little over half stack armies for a challenge. 10-15 units. However, Hard provides some fun battles, which most people overlook. Most people either play Medium or Very Hard. Those who play on Hard know what I'm talking about. They still get some bonuses which you have to deal with, but overall it's pretty fun.

I gave hard a go the other day and I couldnt get 20 samnite spearmen to rout even though they where surrounded on 3 sides by hastati and principes

Now that I think about it more it could have been the command star thing maybe I was a bit hasty, guess i'll have to have a few custom battles on hard to try it out.

This is upsetting to say the least. Any one that's played EB long enough will understand how much sweat and blood was required to carry a game to 133 BC.

I'm fighting almost impossible odds at this point, but am still winning enough battles to carry me through. I've got the Aedui, Sweboz, and Greeks all attacking me. My Roman empire spans all of Italy and a few Provinces up north. Almost every new settlement I take is lost within a few turns to the Greeks, the super power in the game.

It's a vicious game of cat and mouse. The Greeks are able to produce new armies at lighting speed. However, I'm able to fight them off with some success.

But the new Sweboz threat is really getting annoying. I've resorted to exploiting the stupid AI during sieges to keep the Germans at bay. But fighitng countless sieges has really slowed the pace of the game and it's becoming more of a choir than anything else.

I worked so hard to get this far, only to find out that VH battles are grossly in favour of the enemy. I could probably win in the end. My only driving force right now is to expierence a triumph (which has evaded me to no end) and see the next two reforms. Infact, I held out on an early conquest of Europe just to save it for the Polybian troops and Imperial armies. The early game amnesty towards my neighbours is what got me in the situation I'm in now.

It is harder then VH on vanilla, due to experience of the general or the rationing and food supplies and ect.

I've successfully changed the game to hard using ROMESAGE. Just don't tamper with the years setting. I changed it to 110 and the game started at 192. Lol, I really want to use the reformed army.
