do anyone know if theres any bonus when fighting in the dark? i wonder cause only more skilled generals can lead the troops in the dark.

I think that archers and atrilleries accuracy is worse, and also no reinforcements can help in such a battle.
"Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."

Wrong.
Reinforcements CAN arrive: but only if the reinforcements are lead by a night fighting general.
I think the enemy is also surprised and rout easily maybe, and no chance to move into formation but I'm NOT SURE.

If possible I always try to do night battles and have found that my archers don't seem to have any penalties. ( it maybe just me however.)
I have also noticed that the opposition troops are sometimes exhaused when the battle begins.

another question... if your troops are hiding in the forest, to they also exstinguish their torches? or perhaps they can hide?
is there any other form of concealment? I can imagine that an army on a good distance of the enemy cant be seen at all, not even on open field.....

I try to do night battles as much as possible, but rarely get more than 1 or 2 per game as my "night fighter" Generals die off, and no others become qualified. I even tried putting some other young Generals in with the "night fighters", and pushed them into a night battle, but when it was over, the younger Generals were still not "night fighters." Isn't that a kick in the teeth?
I have never had an enemy attack me at night. Are they afraid? Maybe they think my men are not just men, but bogey-men!

Hi
Are we talking about RTW or an expansion pack like BI ?
I play RTW with patch V1.5 but have not seen anything about night fighting. I have had 10star generals.

Night battles are only in BI I think.
Well worth the price for the expansion!!

You can still hide in a forest with torches. No morale handicap for AI. Night battles really help when you fight multiple armies. Sometimes only one army will fight. Also useful against hordes.
Missile units have regular accuracy. Night fighters (generals) have a bonus command rating also.Originally Posted by x-dANGEr

i was once attacked in the night.
i never noticed anything that was worse or better by attacking or defending in the night

Yep, the ability to isolate enemy stacks using night attacks is invaluable when fighting barbarian hordes. I've used it to great effect fighting as the WRE![]()
"I request permanent reassignment to the Gallic frontier. Nay, I demand reassignment. Perhaps it is improper to say so, but I refuse to fight against the Greeks or Macedonians any more. Give my command to another, for I cannot, I will not, lead an army into battle against a civilized nation so long as the Gauls survive. I am not the young man I once was, but I swear before Jupiter Optimus Maximus that I shall see a world without Gauls before I take my final breath."

I think it's all too useless.. All this work just to get to attack an army without reinforcements..

buit if you attack the hordes at night and defeat like 2-3 armies, dont the rest immidiatly attack you by daylight in after the turn is over?

I've rarely had a battle lost until night, but are there battles that just start off in the middle of the night?

yup, if you have a general that is good enough he can attack enemy in middle of the night.

Yes but as mentioned above, one of the best uses is to dive into the middle of the multiple horde stacks with a strong army. Attack, and hopefully give a good kicking to the horde in question, taking them one stack at a time. Then even if they do attack you in the next turn there down to a much more managiable size.
I have never had a besieging Army attack me in the morning after I attacked them at night.Originally Posted by red comyn
It could be that one of the first things I did in deployment was to send my cavalry to the flanks and behind the enemy, much like the Zulu's "Horns of the Bull." When my infantry and missile units get the enemy routing, I redirect them to another target, and put my cavalry cutting down the ones routing. They have to run past my cavalry to get away, so my cavalry does not have to chase them very far, in fact, they are usually "waiting" for them.
Very few of them make it over the line. Those that do are usually cavalry which I usually do not try to chase. So, the cavalry remnants get away, while the infantry are cut to steak for the carrion birds. Not much to attack with the next morning.

Only once did a night attack... usually dont have generals that experienced, they die off too quickly....
never did a city night attack, is that any cool?

I was wondering, when you Night Attack an army, does it have a chance to withdraw or not?

yes enemies can withdraw i think. (or was it the player?)
if your archers fire in the night... the arrows are lit... so do they automaticly fire arrows on fire?
the rate of fire is then slower then during the day... :-(
carpe noctum (and their women!)
just disable the fire mode then they shoot normal arrows

ok.. so in night fights they automaticly have that option in...
did you guys know that in early warfare you were supposed to warn the enemy you were shooting arrows in the dark? and it was considered very unsportsmanlike to just fire them because they could not be seen....

City attacks are really cool at night, or should I say, "city defenses?" The torches are there in the Warrior's hands, but you also see the interiors of the wall towers and buildings lit up.Originally Posted by Cras

Here is a funny thing, I am playing a ERE game. I started off with a General with the night fighter trait. ( In other camps. I have used him to take out the Sassanids.) However I built up an army fought a few night battles - Really cool I think. I was then besieging Hatra and when I went to do the assault, the option for a night battle was greyed out.
I was a bit confused at this and when I had a closer inspection of my general I saw that the night fighter trait was gone.
I have checked every other General in my employ and not one ( except my faction leader) has the trait.
Has anyone else seen this? I didn't know you could lose traits once you had them.
May the Foss be with you....
I had a "night fighter" General as ERE which I used to take a city from the Sassanids about a week ago. I decided to make it a night attack. Just when I was about to win, I had a CTD which took me back to my last turn.Originally Posted by Cras
After getting back into the campaign map, I attacked again at the same place, and took it.
The Sassanids attacked me to take it back a few times after that, but they just died in the darkness too.
Then they asked for peace.
The General has since died, and I do not see any "night fighter" generals on the map belonging to anybody, so at this point, I figure they have all died off.
So, I suppose that "night battles" will not take place until I start another BI campaign.
