A very well done bit of work. My hat's off to you Mr. Woad Warrior!I have used variations of many of these types of formations, but never had them explained so well. I admit to never having tried the Schiltron blocks before. I'll add it to my repitoire in future. The Imperial Roman Army's standard formation was similar to what you call the block formation. The main diference was a fourth line of Auxilary Infantry and Cavalry behind the main three Legionary Cohort battle lines. It is a very flexible formation, and by grouping each line of Cohorts and splitting the available Auxilary and Cavalry, the whole formation can be rapidly altered to an linear, refused flank, square or refused center to meet any threat.
It looked somewhat like this:DLC= First Cohort(or double cohort) LC= Legionary Cohort, Cv= Cavalry, AI= Auxilary Infantry, ar = Archers.
LC LC LC DLC
ar LC LC LC ar
LC LC LC ar
Cv CV ar AI AI AI AI
Give it a try when playing the Romans. I won't say that it is always the best formation, but it will do in a pinch.![]()
