    Default Protectorates: A few Questions.

Ok, I'm doing a Macedonian campaign in RTR and I had a few questions. First of all, is there a limit to how many settlements the other faction has that you're trying to make a protectorate? What exactly does a protectorate help with? More money? Protection from attack from them? Please help me out here.

well i think protectorate is the same for all mods or regular RTW. i think their provinces count as your province. they dont protect you i think. thats all i know. im not very sure because i only started gettin protectorates this month in my campaigns. (i read a diplomacy giude.)

I'm pretty sure they pay you tribute each turn, their regions count as yours, and only you can break the agreement. That said, it is possible that they abandon the agreement. IE if your ally attacks them or you attack their ally.

I'm not quite sure what you mean on your first question. As said by spartan and glaucus their settlements do count as yours and they will never attack or cancel your alliance unless what was previously said by glaucus and if you try to demand anything of them. The only diplomatic relations you can have with a protectorate is offering them gifts anything else will cancel the alliance. The amount of money they will give you usually depends on the size of the faction. If a protectorate is inbetween you and an enemy faction your enemy will attack them first. And something I thought was interesting, any faction will become your protectorate, no matter the size, at any time for 1 million denari.

I dont know if that helps or not.

I think that would take longer than gaining the money normally.

The term 'protectorate' means that those provinces are under your protection; that's why you get military access to those provinces, and their excess cash goes to you. You're expected to station armies there to prevent someone from invading them. Of course, you'd do that anyway if they were yours, so it's win/win (as long as you're not playing 1.0 where the system was bugged and you would pay all your money to the protected territories!)

You already mentioned the best points:
    * Provinces, owned by your protectorates count as your own provinces in the winning conditions.
    * Protectorates pay money to you in every round, relating to their treasure!

It pays to make fractions with strong economy to become your protectorates, as for examples the Carthagians and the Greek in original RTW.
It is a good idea to make a fraction with huge stockpiles of money becoming your protectorate. I once came in really troubled water with my money for some unexpected reasons. Then a fraction with biggest money went to war after me. I killed some big armies in one turn and made them becoming my protectorate. Because of their stockpile they payed me for 3 turns around 20 times of my normal income! But after their stockpile was given out, their tribute was only below 3k Denarii per turn, after the millions before! So look out for rich enemies.

I`m wondering, with this horrible diplomacy in RTW/BI, if I agree to become a protectorate, can I be sure of that they will not declare war on me in a few turns later on?

No you can't. The Egyptians and the Gauls, for example, seems so keen on making me their protectorate, no matter what faction I play as. Even when the Egyptians are down to the three provinces in the Nile delta, they make an offer of:

    -Become protectorate.
    -Give us 50 000 denarii
-Give us back all the provinces you took from us
    -Accept or we will attack

The Gauls don't demand any money, but when they're down to one province, in which is only a town, with 500 people in it, which makes -3000 a turn, they still have the nerve to ask ME to become THEIR protectorate.

Oh, and did I mention that Egypt just attacks you the SAME turn, even when you've given all their provinces back and actually given them 50 000 denarii?

Don't go for diplomacy man, it's bugged as hell. The only language the AI understands is combat.

There's a reason why the game is called Total War.
