The difference is that the Democrats don't claim to be the champions of those things, while the Republicans do.Originally Posted by Alexander the Pretty Good
That's what really drives me crazy about the Republicans. They have themselves convinced that they have to pander to the religious right in order to retain power. And by doing so, they have to abandon their own long held principles and turn off a huge portion of the electorate: fiscal conservatives who are socially progressive.
If they were to just ease up on all the religious/moral crap they spout, they would entice way more voters away from the Democrats than they would lose. Because let's face it: it's a two party system. If the religious right gets pissed at the GOP, what are they going to do, vote Democrat? The party of abortion and sodomy?
Get real. They'll hold their noses and keep voting Republican while praying for a plague of locusts to smite their enemies.
Stepping closer to the middle right now would be the best way for the GOP to ensure another 8 or 12 years of power. It would completely nail the Democrat coffin shut.
