They will be, eventually. Patience

Has there been any historical source that mentions that Praetorians taking part in military actions? If not, what would be the point? Leave the slot for some other unit.
I'm sure Suetonius mentions it, I can't think of any others off the top of my head but its almost certainly in Tacitus somewhere. Traditionally Praetorians were the General's elite veterans, the guarded the camp and were excused the messy duties like ditch digging. More importantly though they acted as the elite tactical reserve.
Augustus simply took the concept and reformed them into an Imperial guard.

Ah, so more like a Cohors Consularis.
Praetorians wandered around Germany with Germanicus, I think.

tacticus says that otho takes all the pratorian guard and city guard in the civil war agaisnt viti-(something) when upper and lower germany legions rebelled after the one after Nero died, i forget the names.
its in the histories, tacitus 2 the histories 1-3

Well prior to Augustus they were really an informal group created by the general and, as noted, they were named after a section of the camp.Originally Posted by abou

Your order of princeps' is a bit off....Originally Posted by toxicseagull
The first you mentioned would be Vitellius; he succeded Otho in 69 AD and was overthrown by Vespasian later in the year, thus he was the 3rd emperor during the year of the 4 emperors...
The second is Sulpicius Galba, who became princeps shortly after the Vindex revolt was crushed by Verginius Rufus early in 69AD. He was assasinated due to the machinations of Otho, thus Galba was the 1st emperor in the year of the 4 emperors.
yes those are the name i was trying to remember.
but it was otho who takes the preatorians and city guard of rome out of the city to attack vitellius along the PO river.
*sigh*
Do the Romans need another elite footmen unit? I mean, are they really necessary, since you could use the unit slot for something else.
what? Preatorians are already in EB.
Oh wait, they are; there is even a picture of them in the gallery. You meant in reference to when they would be available in the game itself, Spartan.
Preatorians would be the only elite foot unit in the era, actually.Originally Posted by Musopticon?
So yes, we do need them.

Hopefully there will be enough stone axe wielding, iron axe wielding, mace wielding, new chariot driving, small pony riding different types of units in the next build to keep folks interested in fighting new styles.
Actually, yes.Originally Posted by Trithemius

I hear a phalanx a-coming...

As it stands now, Pontus has no pezhetaroi equivalent at all. Rather than giving Roma another heavy infantry unit, why not giving Pontus one?
I realise they aren't mutually exclusive, but you wanted an answer.
Should they have one?Originally Posted by Musopticon?

Their heaviest phalanx is pantodapoi phalangitai, which is basically a levy unit for Successors, so yes.
Pontos was supposed to have the Chalkaspidai (Bronze Shields), but they were cut out of .07x at the last minute. The updated unit should be in 0.80.
