Default How is that inheriting land, again?

XL Mod, started in high, cc1390
I play the Hungarians, I have a solid empire to build on - noone can match it, as of today. Empire includes: Milan, Tyrol, Austria, Bohemia, Lesser Poland, Moldavia Levedia and the rest of it down south. Also the most of the Med. islands and the middle of North Africa. Also Ireland and Scandinavia.

Yet not too big to get princesses from time to time. So I got a Polish princess for my firstborn. I tried to test the theory so I decided to kill of the Polish royal family with grand inquisitors. I succeeded.

    However...

They went rebel. None of the 4 territories they owned turned allegiance to me.

    Is it that random?

Only works if my king is the one that married the Polish princess?

ANYONE inherited land and can confirm some of this? Please?

You know in my entire time of playing this game I have never inherited a single piece of land.

The only time it happened to me was when I was playing as the Byzantines. I had lost Greece to the Serbs, then later made peace and formed an alliance with them. The Serb Tzar married his princess to my prince. Later the Serbs died without an heir and I inherited Greece off them, but only Greece. So maybe it has something to do with the fact that I owned the territory before.

My best friend (whom I used to live with at the time) was playing as the English in one game, and his king's oldest son married a Spanish princess. Once the wedding had taken place, my friend quickly dispatched his three best assassins, and every Spanish male of royal blood was dead in the space of a few years. As soon as the last Castillian prince shuffled loose the mortal coil, the entire Iberian peninsula--even Portugal--suddenly became English territory! I myself have had results that were more in between what you and my friend have experienced: I've always inherited at least a couple provinces, but rarely more than that.

Why it is my roommate managed to inherit an entire kingdom and you didn't get squat, I honestly have no idea. Truth be told, I have a feeling the whole thing is somewhat random.

I've seen it happen twice (that I can remember), only once to me though, the first time i saw it was when the Mongols arrived, they as usual were offered many alliances by a wide range of factions, none less than Aragon.

Somewhere along the line a Aragonese princess married into the Mongol royal house and when the Aragonese king died without an heir the Mongols gained Aragon itself.

It happened to me as the English, my royal house and that of the Danes had been intermarrying for decades. Prince Henry brother of my then king Edward had married a Danish princess. 40 or so years later, without even Henry ascending to the throne having been passed over for the kings sons and grandsons, the Danish king died and his lands in Germany passed to me, the rest going rebel.

The prince I married off never even became king and had actually died before the last Danish king had died, by this point just about everybody of that generation was long dead, yet still large tracts of land in Germany were inherited by me.

This is the only explanation I can think of because after Henry there was no more intermarrying between Denmark and England as we were at war from the following year to the year of my inheritance. Other princes and princesses who had married before hand, will have been long long dead so it couldnt possibly have generated from an earlier marriage.

Thats as far as my thinking goes on what triggers it, something as blatent (Mongol example) and as obscure (English example) had the same results.

Time to pull out the lawyers.

Marquis de Said: Nice going by the way. Maybe the way to inherit something is to switch to other factions and have them offer you princesses :D In wonder how much land you could inherrit that way.

I think you can only inherit land if a foreign princess marries into your family, not the other way around. That explains why you don't get offered princesses as much as you get offered alliances.

However I have never inherited land, as most of you here, and probably never will :S

I seem to inherit land almost every game that I play a smaller faction in XLMod. The thing I do is play passive and only attack provinces that go rebel. Also I never accept or offer direct alliances...I wait for others to send their princesses to me. Which eventually the smaller factions will do, but not the bigger ones. This ends up working perfect since the smaller ones are the ones that get wacked off and you can gain a few provinces that way.

The thing is I only prolly win or finish about 25% of my games though. I think most of you are just alot better at building an expansive empire than I am. I don't think I have even won a game on expert or hard to be honest...I just have to many economic issues early in the game to do well. Again though I normally play a faction starting with a single province in most my games. I don't remember ever inheriting land with Germany, Spain, Egypt or England.
