Yes, the Nintendo Revolution's final name has been revealed. Wii. Cue terrible jokes along the lines of the topic title, or (courtesy of Tim Buckley) 'now i can play with my wii all night long!'
Discuss this odd marketing decision.
almost as bad a name as the LameCube,![]()

Actually Gamecube is a good name. As it's a nearly cube shapped thing that plays games. N64 that was lame ass name. Not a stupid as Wii but close.

Why couldn't they just stick to revolution
It's a Wii-volution (sorry couldn't help it)

All the lame jokes are over on slashdot. I think it sounds incredibly stupid, but maybe that's the point. It sure lit up the 'Net overnight and got everyone talking about it, in a way that wouldn't have happened if they used something more predictable.
Aside from the free PR buzz, having a silly and diminutive name means the actual platform doesn't have to live up to anything grandiose like "Revolution." So maybe that's an advantage too. I just hope intentionally stupid/silly product names doesn't become a big trend.

The way I look at it, this is the final indication that Nintendo is abandoning the race for power in the console market, surrendering the hard-core gamer audience to Microsoft or Sony. They now focus on picking up the more casual family-oriented crowd.

From http://winnipegsun.com/SundayFocus/2...57374-sun.html.The motion-sensing capabilities of the Wii's wand-like controller would seem a good fit for a new game in the beloved Super Monkey Ball franchise, but the real selling point comes from Sega creative director Matt Woodley, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz: "The new controller, in particular, gives the gamer unique control over their monkey's balls."

Actually, Ive read the opposite- that the Revolution (Im holding off on using that stupid name for as long as I can) will be the gaming connoisseur's system. It's the only one offering any real innovation afterall, the other systems are just more of the same with prettier graphics. I guess it comes down to how you define a 'hard-core'r gamer.Originally Posted by Lehesu
As to the name- I think it was a pretty dumb choice. It probably won't matter much in Japan where the 360 is already pretty much finished, but American gamers need a cooler sounding name before they'll buy a console... for some reason. I dont really like the name myself, but I'll get used to it.

Is thsi real? Why would they shoot themselves in the foot by naming it that when Revolution was perfectly acceptible?

Indeed
I can get the name Revolution, cool name and says something about the product.
Wii on the other hand is just lame, I mean what does it even stand for - to second Csar's question.

It's a pretty sad explanation that they've offerred... Wii, pronounced "we" signifies how it's a system for everyone to play together, and the 'ii' is supposed to be symbolic of the controllers... blah, blah, blah....Originally Posted by Dutch_guy

So very true, a name shouldn't really matter. Though it may lead to very acquired moments when your explaining to your GF your playing a Wii. With the PS3's supposed cost of 600 euro's, 700-800 dollars I'm betting the Wii might do pretty well against the other consoles.Originally Posted by Xiahou

I thought they said it would cost about $450-500.

They were going for $100-200 (I think that's US).
Anyway, here's something random I made for the "occasion":
