Default When generals are infantry units...

I have with English general Urban Militia with 5* and 2 Feudal Seargents (one with 9* (I think he is hero unit, he had 7* on start) and one with 5*).

Now I start with Sicily and have two 2* Chivalric Man at Arms.

They are not fast as cavalry, more fragile (especially UM) and AI seems to always shoot them with archers/crossbowen/javelin units. Few times I didn't used them in battle and they gained V'n'V Not so bold.

How to use generals who are infantry unit?

    P.S.
    I always preffer cavalry generals.

I usually put them right behind my infantry centre, backing the units up who are likely going to have the hardest time.

Also, when attacking, I tend to move slowly and controlled, that way my infantry ( and maybe heavily armoured ) general doesn't lag behind nor does he get too tired.

While you may use your prince, king or other cavalry general as a heavy flanking force you'll find that a little more dangerous with an infantry general. As he is slower and (probably) has a far lower charge bonus, and you're heavily engaged units might brake when their general isn't covering their backs because he's performing a flanking manoeuvre.

So manouvering is a tad bit harder, but infantry generals have their advantages too... you could - as an example - put him in the woods when facing an all cavalry enemy army - that way he's more effective against cavalry and gives your troops the regular bonuses.

I'm an athiest. I get offended everytime I see a cold, empty room. - MRD

I agree when I face enemy in forests - they are excellent then but in open battles is very difficult.

In high and late era, heavely armored general infantry is magnet for AI arbalesters as I had painfull experience with this.

It's not so bad really especially if he's leading a 100 man unit. You don't get the speed but you get a nice boost to your army's numbers.

Keep your infantry general in the center, but out of range of the missle troops. I know, easier said than done. True, I often use him and his men to help out the trouble spots, just remember, don't use a wedge (your general will be at the tip) !

    @ gaijinalways

I never used wedge formation for infantry.

Always use it when you use swords against spears. And if you're charging into the rear of the enemy or against a weak general's unit, use the wedge.
