I suppose I should have phrased that better; let's just say it's highly recommended that you break that spear block into tiny little pieces. Trying to go head to head will only allow the spearmen to fight to their full advantage. Others have suggested before that you spread your MAAs into a single or double line, charge in a wedge, and go to tight formation after the tip of your wedge is into the block. This allows for greater penetration and the ability to hit the spears on the flank.

I like taking weak enemy generals head on with a wedge because it increases the possibility that your general will kill the enemy general. This is a good way to get a virtue or two and always use the wedge with striking the rear.
