I play with the huge size simply because I like watching the massive armies in battle.
Since unit size effects upkeep, cost, time to build I expect it has implications on the pace of the game.
I was wondering what everyone else prefers?

Large, I think, where spears and peasants have 133 men, swords 80 and cavalry 53. I´ve tried huge, but I think it´s too unwieldy.
I´m not sure which impact size has in MTW, namely on costs, but in RTW the larger the unit size the more population is drawn from the cities, slowing their growth down.
I used to use the largest 2 settings, but I now go for medium or default unit sizes. The lower upkeep and unit cost enables both you and the AI to recruit more units and gives the smaller factions a chance I think. I just found on huge settings nations like Denmark and the Aragonese would end up being debt with about 10 Royal knight units that were taking up all their income.

I go with the default size. Larger units are too unwieldly/costly, and smaller units just look silly to me.

they always do that. no matter what setting you play on (well i guess it does makes a difference when you play on small)Originally Posted by professorspatula

I use default, because I'm used to the troop numbers and can tell at a glance if a unit is understrength, if I go up in size I'd have to learn them all over again.![]()
i play on default. Why? because the AI cant handle huge. it has effect on cost, building time etc. but you wont make more money to compensate with that. resulting in less armies. (not less men) ive noticed that its way harder to blitz on default than it is on huge.Originally Posted by fredrick
while we players usually make much money and can easily find a balance between army and income and will conquer chokepoints the AI wont. resulting in fast bankrupted countries. while you would expect it will slow down the game it makes it faster.

I play on default because if I want 200 peasants/spearmen/whatever I just build 2 units of 100. Since the first one will be ready next turn, I find that an advantage.
BTW, units like the Varangian Guard and others in the MedMod need 2 turns in default. Does anyone know how many turns they need in huge?
I preferred the unit size Large, just because it still allowed you to have massive battles with thousands of troops. But doesn't make it where you have to wait for two years to get the unit you want.
