Thread: MTW preferred unit size?

  1. #1

    Default MTW preferred unit size?

I play with the huge size simply because I like watching the massive armies in battle.

Since unit size effects upkeep, cost, time to build I expect it has implications on the pace of the game.

I was wondering what everyone else prefers?

Large, I think, where spears and peasants have 133 men, swords 80 and cavalry 53. I´ve tried huge, but I think it´s too unwieldy.
I´m not sure which impact size has in MTW, namely on costs, but in RTW the larger the unit size the more population is drawn from the cities, slowing their growth down.

I used to use the largest 2 settings, but I now go for medium or default unit sizes. The lower upkeep and unit cost enables both you and the AI to recruit more units and gives the smaller factions a chance I think. I just found on huge settings nations like Denmark and the Aragonese would end up being debt with about 10 Royal knight units that were taking up all their income.

I go with the default size. Larger units are too unwieldly/costly, and smaller units just look silly to me.

I use default, because I'm used to the troop numbers and can tell at a glance if a unit is understrength, if I go up in size I'd have to learn them all over again.

i play on default. Why? because the AI cant handle huge. it has effect on cost, building time etc. but you wont make more money to compensate with that. resulting in less armies. (not less men) ive noticed that its way harder to blitz on default than it is on huge.

while we players usually make much money and can easily find a balance between army and income and will conquer chokepoints the AI wont. resulting in fast bankrupted countries. while you would expect it will slow down the game it makes it faster.

i dont like MTW's unit size, it is really confusing. I like RTW's a lot better. It is much simpler.

How is it simpler? Rome's default unit sizes are similar--if not identical--to those in MTW. I fail to see how MTW's units are more confusing.

I play on huge. I like the larger battles and the increased building times add an element of planning: you can't quickly finish a unit of men-at-arms if you are expecting an attack.

in reality you could do that so why not in game? the AI will go backrupt very fast becuz you have to pay more for the same army while you dont make more money. so you wont have a very challenging campaign. and its cool to fight bigger battles with bigger units but not if you wont encounter big armies

In reality, medieval kings called on their vassels to provide them with pre-trained armies. They did not train them one by one. None of the TW games comes close to simulating how troops were levied. I agree that upkeep is a problem for the A.I., but I play MedMod where it is less of an issue. I did not notice any serious problems with A.I. army size and quality, or at least less so than in vanilla. Still, it is quite long ago since I played with normal unit, so I cannot really make an comparision.

i dont play a mod cuz most ar for VI and i dont have VI. but than again i dont mind which setting becuz you find yourself in a bigger battle in MTW faster than with RTW.

I been playing on default so far, but am thinking of switching to huge. If huge unit size makes the game unbalanced, I'll stick with default.

    I use medium size,
the huge units size causes problems on my system in larger battles and I don't like the play. Small unitsize doesn't look or play right imho.

yeah, i agree. small units sucks but in MTW big units suck too. i do play with huge on RTW becuz they only change size and not upkeep or anything

I have been playing on huge, or the biggest you can get with mtw VI. And the one flaw...royal knights stay at 20. Its a common unit and a big flaw.

For all my games I've tended to leave it on normal size. To minimize the numbers problem, I tend to feudal/chivalric sgts until i can get a significant amt of arm. swiss pikemen. For archery, i usually go the opposite direction, relying on horse archers a few foot archers in support of the main line. To complete, i generally like to have a fair mix of heavy/light cavalry. In the battle line its generally broken down to about 35-50% cav archers 10-20% cav. with the balance being fully capable infantry. Generally, i prefer 100 man units for the infantry, spearmen and on up but preferably feudal sgts swiss armored pikeman combo. For those seeking experience with larger than normal sized units, play the historical battle of hastings.,

I play on default because if I want 200 peasants/spearmen/whatever I just build 2 units of 100. Since the first one will be ready next turn, I find that an advantage.
BTW, units like the Varangian Guard and others in the MedMod need 2 turns in default. Does anyone know how many turns they need in huge?

I preferred the unit size Large, just because it still allowed you to have massive battles with thousands of troops. But doesn't make it where you have to wait for two years to get the unit you want.
