    Default valour 11 ???????

I,ve just had one of my units apear on the battlefield with valour 11! The unit is also a 5 star general. When I looked on the campaign map after the battle it was down to valour 6. Can annyone explain this?

The unit gets a valour bonus from the general's command ability (I think one point of valour for every two levels of command), and it probably also had a virtue like 'brave beyond believe', which adds to valour. These bonuses usually don't show on the campaign map, only in battles.

Possibly the unit leader had a virtue like secret pride or some other that increases valor, and the unit leader was killed in battle.

also valour is just averaged, maybe a high valour man/men died and reduced the overall number.

Valour calculation does appear to be quirky occasionally, but never to this amount. I don't think it is related to the general's bonus and AFAIK V&V bonuses do show up on the campaign map. My only explanation is that the unit routed and several low-valour soldiers got captured, thus dramatically increasing valour. But even then such a jump is hard to explain.

I've seen such valour inconsistencies between battle and campaign often. To me it seems to be when the unit has a virtue giving them a valour bonus and this is reflected by their valour value on the campaign map, but when you enter a battle the unit seems to get the same bonus AGAIN. Its not just a general's bonus thing as it only applies to that unit, not the whole army.
Doesnt happen all the time though, maybe its just one of the virtues which is bugged?
Can anyone else back this up?

This sounds highly plausible. I also remember a case where a unit lost a man and their valour went up because that mans valour was lower than the average and so the average went up with his demise. It is a big jump though.

I agree with this explanation. I get it quite often with high-valour generals. They tend to get the valour bonus given by the general to all the troops twice. It is really weird, as it doesn't even follow a set formula (or none that I can make sense of). Once I had a Turcoman Horse general at valour 13. I didn't really skirmish with the guy, I just charged at anything and everything.

I had experiences with 6-valour unit of royal Boyar becoming 10-valour on the battlefield. Tigger_on_vrb's explanation seems good.

I think one of the virtues - murderous temper maybe - only increase the units valour when it gets on the battlefield. Description states that is virtue gives a valour bonus in battle and I think the valour does change from camp map to battle map.

However I don't think increase is quite so much. But it could be a combination of that and other factors such as losses.

Also, does you general get any bonuses for attacking - ie. a +3 attack command bonus for a 5 star general would result in a 8 star general which would give +2 valour increase - this increase would not show up on camp map until you moved the generals piece to attack a province. This might also explain at least part of the effect.
