Thread: A very scary bird flu scenario.

Default A very scary bird flu scenario.

Aside from millions of people dying from it what else do you think will happen?

I think it would be utter chaos. Remember the part in war of the worlds when the angry mob steals a car and beats tom cruise up, then another guy kills the person who took the car and hops on. I think it would be like that....only 10 times worse

With the police tied up with quarantines and the like. And our army fighting the war on terror. No one would keep order. Every wacko and thug with a "score to settle" would seize the opportunity. Those who were too stupid to prepare will steal food from every one else. This will lead to many gun fights, or in countries with few guns criminals would have complete control because the people with guns are to busy (the police) and average Joe can't defend himself (or his family) from an armed criminal or 6 unarmed criminals. People would flock to the country thinking it is safer and when they realize there is no where to go they will try and take over a house, this once again will cause fights to the death,

Neighbors would kill each other for some canned goods after the police and national guard quit giving out food rations so they can have enough for themselves, separatist militias would add to the chaos. I don’t know about you euros... but in America there are some good militias and some creepy, tinfoil hat, hard core ones that would try and take over little sections of USA!

It would terrible. There would bee food shortages, water shortages and crime would plague everywhere.

None of the above is real. But it is what I think will happen.

What do you think of my creepy vision? and what do you think would happen?

    Sorry for any grammar errors!

A realize this a kinda' wierd neagtive veiw....but I dont see every one cooperating and working together if bird flu comes.

I think bird flu will mutate eventually. But we will have a vacine or something to slow it down when it happens. If that does not happen look at my first post

It's your everyday's disaster scenario, replace the chickencough with whatever you like and it will still be true. Personally I am not worried at all, how many lives did it claim, one out of how many cases? And where? A normal flue could finish of a child or an elder, just a hype.

Actually massive epidemias that kill many tend to end up creating a pretty peaceful atmosphere with plenty of resources and high living standards for all survivors. Sure there can be some trouble scenarios in the early phases, but those who buy conserves will survive while in quarantine. The supplying of new food etc. might be a problem for a while, but only until after the first disease wave passes. But I don't think the flu will be that dangerous at all. I think it's overhyped.

OK Europe post WW1. A large abount of France and Belgium destroyed. Several empires over, others destroyed in all but name, massive unemployment the works. Russia is fighting their civil war with input from Europe and America. Deaths of over 10 million.

Then bird flu wipes out another 30 million.

Yes, and the bird flu will still get in your house, on rats, on the air, on something, and when we are safe in the knowledge that we won't die, you will be suffocating because you've got no air-holes.

I thought the flu after WW1 killed 18 million, or am I talking about something totally different?

The Spanish flu killed somewere between 20-40 million people.

As for Sweden, in case of a regular "doomsday virus" (killing 2-10% of the population) I pretty much doubt the total breakdown of the system as ceasar010 is thinking about. That would require instant death of the entire governing system at the same time the virus is spreading.

The worst incidents will probably came from people trying to flee from quarantined cities, but the cities themself would be very, very calm.
That requires though that someone had actually followed standard procedure and that someone is bringing in food into the cities.

Those riots caused by disruption of the civil system is soo un-Swedish.

I know it's not fool proof.....but I'd have a better chance then most other people

First a mutation has to occur for starters and the current bird flu will not all mutate in lock step.

So no matter how widespread the current version of bird flu is, a mutation will start at a single spot and then be transmitted outwards. There is a massive time delay. Also the mutation may effect how deadly it is and how it is transmitted. The more immediately deadly the harder it will be to spread outwards... look at ebola compared with AIDS. So that adds another layer to the time component.

Time to mutate, time to transmit between patients, time to kill, time to travel between locations... it could be decades for a deadly version to get around.

You might have grandkids before a version is up around killing people...

    Bird flu can't {as far as the news knows} be transmitted from one person to another, only from bird to human. So this scenario already has taken a hit. Then also like most flu, this strand of virus is likely only lethal to the very old, very young, and those with weakened immune systems {Like those with hepitits A,B,and C, or AIDS}

I don't think that entire cities will be quarentened as I've never heard of such a thing being enacted before in america, save for movies like Resident Evil. I've never seen War of the Worlds, but I watched a scare-tactic T.V. program a couple weeks ago that gave a worst-case scenario. It's really not something that I give a lot of thought to, mostly because it's such an unlikely event, if not an impossible event.

But if your truely affraid of this, then I'd simply suggest start stocking up a little more when you go to the grocery store, maybe buy a little extra non-perishable food to stash away in some unnamed section of your house. Then you'll rest easier, though I wouldn't bet anything like this is going to happen anytime soon. It is never a bad idea to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Interestingly enough Vermont will probably see a large population increase if/when such an epidemic hits. An estimate that appeared in the paper today said the population may go from 600,000 to as many as two million. The article also predicted very little help from the Feds, and stated that the response to Katrina had forced local officials to realize that they have to prepare for the absolute worst case scenario.

The article also mentioned that local officials have been asking for permission to use refridgerated spaces owned by private individuals and companies in case we need room to store corpses, among those that our civil servants have been lobbying for free-use of the space is Vermont's single greatest company, Ben & Jerries,

Even though it is made out to be a much bigger problem than it is by the media it is nice to know that they are thinking about it.

I remember a few years ago we were all going to die of AIDS. Then it was Ebola that was going to wipe us out, then it was Nile virus. Bird flu is just the flavor of the news cycle right now and you have a better chance of dieing from being attacked by rabid turtles on Mt Everest than contracting this "dreadful" disease.

I am not convince by the bird flue. It was probably sponsored by the Pharmaceutical companies.
It reminds me the panic with another virus (for computers this one), just before the last year before the new millennium. I know, it wasn’t a virus, but it was too good occasion to exploit…
Panic every body, prepare weapons, stockpile food and ammunitions, be ready for the last fight (did you read the Postman, excellent book, nothing except the title linked with the movie?), horror will come from the sky, worst the B2 (at least this one can be shot down…), and coming from Asia (the New Genghis Khan and his thousand Subedei) or Africa (Chaka Zulu and his Impis).
And… nothing. I have born near where the first case was discovered in France. They reopened the farm. Still, no authorisation was given for export, but no new cases.
But, wait, soon enough a new plague will appeared. Just watch discovery: it isn’t if, it is when: mega tsunami, mega volcano, earthquakes, meteorites, plagues, famines, climate changes, wars, etc. Pick one.
