I've recently been playing Take Command 2nd Manassas, and I've seen how fun it can be playing as a division or corp commander in control of large numbers of units. I can choose to take control of individual units or just relate to divisional commanders and set up groups of units with a courier (if he gets through without being killed).
Why hasn't the Total War series put any effort into providing control of greater numbers of units? I wouldn't mind if we went back to 2D sprites, as long as gameplay was improved. This limitation of a meager number of units has easily been overcome by the Take Command series, and they're just two grognards making games for grognards in their spare time. How come a dedicated developer hasn't gotten around to improve the gameplay? I don't mind adding new units and all that, but I haven't seen any improvement in the AI since TW first came out.
Take command has two levels of gameplay selection. One is for the AI cycles and the other is difficulty (how many more men the AI will use). I think the TW series would benefit from some serious revision of the AI. Most people actually play the game in single-player mode. I know I'd rather spend time on the strategic map than than the tactical map because the AI is so easy to beat.
The only enjoyment I got out of the tactical level was in multiplayer, but it is hard to find honourable players anymore. The chat rooms to join a game are overpopulated by less-than-honourable players. It's just not worth the effort.
I'm sure other have been saying the same thing. I just wanted to point out that games are being developed that provide what I think TW has been lacking for some time, and that TW might want to look at a change in gameplay.
Cheers,
(Look a my join date before you start baggin' me out, I've been with TW a long, long time)
