Has anyone found the STW strategy guide book to be useful? I haven't seen a copy myself.

I some regards it's pretty useless, but it does include a very nice 2 page write-up on each provence + there is an interesting chart which demonstrates the statistical advantages/disadvantages of attacking in various situations.

I'll leave questions regarding the strategic merit of the guide to someone who know's better.

Personally I think it is worth the $20 (or whatever they are asking for it). -My perspective may be somewhat askew though, because I received an advanced copy of the guide and was able to read it cover-to-cover before the game was actually released.

It was the only thing that kept me from going off the deep end really.

    Ditto to what Kurando said.

I bought the game, discovered I didn't know how to play it after reading the US manual, drove back to the store...all in one hour during a hurricane! Little did I know I could get the European manual online.

Besides, that online manuals too hard to get into paper form, and that's what I like having for reference.

I guess someone who knows better of its strategic merit would be me since I run a Strategy site. haha.

Well I bought the guide right away and read it cover to cover. What Is ay about it is that it is what the manual should have been. Of course the Manual shouldn't of given you the winning strategy of every province. But aside from that and a few other indepth clan strategies it was what I would of expected the manual to be.

As for the strategic value of the guide it is a great starting point for anyone. Some of the stats are off and I may disagree with a few of the clan strategies but all in all its a great book.

Its got overview of game options and some help on the Tutorials.

Then a chapter on Units, weather and terrain which was some great information.

Then it gives a chapter on Battle. The screen is explained along with formations and the like.

3rd chapter is dedicated completely to the Historical Battles.

4th Chapter is about the clans. Very good chapter stating strengths and weaknesses. Talks about the building types and special units. Then an entire overview of every single province with strategiuc points laid out for you.

then the last chapter is abouyt the custom battles and a small exerpt about Multiplayer.

The stuff in the book is pretty common knowledge to all of us who read the forums and other peoples sites. But when your just starting its great.

I find it great for MP for quick reference to province terrain and attacker-defender advantages..for SP it's good for province stats reference but for the more advanced users the rest is common knowledge

Which translation? Cleary? Giles? Calthrop? Lin? Zi-Chang?

Perhaps its best in the original Klingon.

(I was referring specifically to the game).

Kagnok the strategies in Shogun are based on Sun Tzus book that is why he said that. But if you need startegies I suggest going to Lanzas site. The link is in his sig. Most of CLan Doragon hang out there and we will be glad to offer help.

Lanza you can send me the money later.

you don't need the book. I learned everything I know about STW right here on this forum. of course, it took way longer than usual, but that's the price....

actually, Ianza's STW site is pretty good and informative, just how he manages to use a Geocities site and not have those anooying banners pop up is beyond me...

Putting this on the bottom of the page prevents that damn window from coming up.

If it sees this then it doesn't put up the popup.. The problem is that i use frames so I have an index page and other pages. If i put the above line in the index page it doesn't work b/.c the banner is displays doesn't show up anywhere. However if i put it on the left hand side or the right hand side it depends which one loads first as to weather it uses a popup or this banner.

So believe me there are still problems I have just managed to minimize them.

    lanza27,

I read your entire online strategy guide shortly after buying the game (June 2000?), long before I was a member of this forum. I learned some good stuff that my usual opponents have yet to figure out.

Thanks, everyone for your advice. Tenchimuyo et al., maybe we can talk about Sun Tzu's work and how you can translate it into the game.

Lately my strategy has been "click click click OH NO! click click OH NO!"

Well it just happens I'm a Chinese and I have read Sun-Tzu's book many times, both in the ancient chinese dialect and modern dialect.

Don't buy the guide. It was written pre-game release and has bugs of its own.

It was written knowing that the US game manual would be deliberately deficient.

I was one of many who fought hard and fast just to get the European Manual released to the majority of the world.

Read that on line instead. Don't even print it.

    Tachikaze,
Thank you for your reply. I feel better now.

As for the guide. like i said, it was a good guide to have in the beginning. However, now I would not buy it becasue you can learn most o fit here and the other forums and such. However, one part of the guide that I should put up is the quick reference to all the spots on every province that are good defensively and offensively. there really isn't an online version of that chapter of the book.

Tenchimuyo, you are probably the best person to ask which translation you like best. I recognize that you likely don't need an English translation!

Oh sure. BTW, I prefer the modern dialect because it's easier to understand. Plus the ancient dialect version had some flaws due to its old age.

That would be great. We should open a new topic, but I'm not sure where. Japanese History section doesn't seem quite right for a Chinese text.

A lot of Japanese culture was originally from China. If the Art of War is important in Japanese history, we can talk about it there just fine, imo.

I put a Tzu question in Japanese History forum. Tenchimuyo, your insight is most welcome.

I guess I need to find a copy of the Primus STW guide and flip through it before I order it. This will require actually leaving the computer and going...outside?
