Thread: Roman expansion

    Default Roman expansion

Ave, Right I am going to start a campaign as the Julii. So this will be like a campaign blog with screenshots and writing of what I am doing. What I plan on doing is go for gaul then go into spain and wait a while until I have urban cohorts then invade britian and germany. The only problem is that when I hit 50 settlements the game will stop how can I stop this from happening?

I don't think it does stop, does it? A screen comes up saying do you want to play on.

At least, that's what happened in the WRE PBM I just participated in.

BI has that option, I don't think that RTW has it

RTW has the option for me. I think it would take far too long to wait for the Marian reforms, and you'd definitely be at war with both those factions by then.

No ambitions in the Balkans or in Africa?

Or you could put your entire army on the 2 ships and pillage the big (Syracuse carthage egyptian nile delta) cities for population and have the reforms within 10-15 years. If the gauls get any ideas the senate army usually steps in

Ok thans for the feedback teh expansion has started. With ceasers army I went and took Segesta. A few turns later the senate told me to take Narbo Martius and I am not going to as it will only get me some games. I want to make as much money as I can. I am heading for Caralis. I have got trade rights with Gaul for now I am also sending my diplomat towards greece and macedon as they get most of the money. I'll take some screenshots soon.

caralis has population of about 700, it'll take 10 years before you can build a port there. just south of it sits the real prize ( lightly defended) but good luck with your campaign and have fun

It will not stop if Rome isn´t among the fifty provinces, and as long as you´ve got at least patch 1.2 (that´s the earliest version I´ve played with, so I don´t know what anything below is like) installed, you´re given the option to continue when you´re told that you´ve won.

Don´t worry about the Urban Cohorts not being available, considering that the Scipii and Bruti get the richer provinces to conquer, you´ll probably have the Reforms way before you can manage your own Imperial Palace, that´s what happened to me. Also, you only can attack other Roman faction when your popularity with the people is high enough, and building that will take time.

Or until you can build an assassin...

BM: You should blitz the two Gallic provinces from Cispaline Gaul, instead of allowing them to build troops right in your back yard. Also, you should edit your personal title to begin with 'ad', not 'Ad'. The only capitals in Roman sentences are the first letters of proper nouns, ie names.

Beware of that: it no longer works.Trying to start the civil war by assasination in 1.3 and up can land you in a no man's land where other roman factions can attack you but you can't attack them. And it really sucks...

well with 1.0, when the screen comes up telling you you have beaten the game, hit esc and save the game. Then exit to the main menu and load the game. It will be where you left off, but no message and thus you can continue to play on, even after Rome and 50 provinces.

in 1.0 you can bribe other roman armies for 50% of what it costs to recruit them( thinking of that SPQR stack)

I don't tend to bribe the other romans as they cost way to much and I like to keep the families all seprate for instance no general brutus fighting for the scipii.

Right my first screenshot. I have not had many battles so far. My profit is going up very well. I am taking my time building my towns up by building markets/roads/ports all the needed buildings to make money.

That screenshot was from a few turns ago so I have more money and the Senate told me to take Mediolanium and I am going too as they will give me a reward for it. I am attacking with Ceaser who has 22 men, Another general who has only 9, some triarii and some archers. I'll take screenshots of that battle and all my settlement scrols next time.

Don't wait for Urban Cohorts that would take way too long and you would just build up too much money. Continue conquesting with what you have. You have to wait for the Marius reforms which, in 1.0, cannot happen until sometime after 220BC. You'll have taken all of Gaul and Spain by 240-250BC and still have 20-30 years to wait.

Be thankful they didn't tell you to take Narbo Martius. It seems that they always give me that one on the 4th or 5th turn when I don't have enough of an army to make it there yet.

I have some more screenshots of when I played this morning I will post them later. I have not taken the gaulish settlement yet because gaul sent an army to the fishing village near segesta so I easily defeated them and next turn they will siege segesta. I have trade rights with spain and am heading towards germany then onto the britions. I also have trade rights with with greece, macedon and thrace. next on the trade right list is scythia and pontus.

BM...well done with the screenshot and getting it onto the forum. Looking forward to your progress reports.

11K in the treasury...spend it on more troops and go get the Gauls. Pick up mercenaries on the way if you feel a bit understrength. Dont be afraid of spending all your money by the end of your turn...provided your income is always higher than your wages/costs you should be fine with more money in the bank at the start of the next turn.

Hastati, Equites, Spies will win you gaul quickly. And decide where you want to build archers and try to develop that quickly as those initial archers wont last for ever.

Months back..from my first ever campaign. Also Julii on M/M

Seems I should have followed my own advice...and spent more money expanding the army.

So, if it only doesn't work on 1.3. BM, which version do you play?
