I think you have probably seen this, but it is still impressive. A gang war that leaves over 100 dead in a week!
What do you think of that? What should the government be doing? Is it out of control? Should external powers intervene?

Watch the movie 'City of God', a human life means absolutily nothing there. Interesting about the movie is the cast, they are all from these very parts of town, the director wanted 'natural'. It is a mess there.
Seen it. Impressive. But still...Originally Posted by Fragony

What?! How can this be possible?! Gangs with rifles and grenades?! I refuse to believe it!
After all, look at Brazil, they have some very strict gun control laws. Thus, it is simply not possible for criminals to get guns if guns are outlawed! If they could, what would be the point of gun control laws?

Thanks

Sorry. I do not want to drag this into another gun control thread.
It sprang into my head after reading that police officers were forbidden to buy more ammunition.
Anyways, back on topic-I'm surprised they haven't sent the military in to the city. It sounds like near anarchy.

Yeah it's a really messed up situation, you have millions of people from the country living in illigal homes with little to no police monitoring, most of the youths in drug-traficking gangs. The crime rate inside the slums is surprisingly low, disregarding the drug trade, because if the police get called into the neighobourhoods it costs the gangs dearly. So a lot of people there leave their homes unlocked ironically enough.
Guns are not outlawed in Brazil. They have about 17,000,000 registered firearms. It's illigal to carry them outside of the home but whateva.Originally Posted by Crazed Rabbit

I'm not a military expert, but both parties prefer to use guerrilla tactics, thus it will be not a good option to send the military. Besides sending people trained to kill into a heated terrain with many innocents in it will be a very bad choice IMO.Originally Posted by Crazed Rabbit

Note for the rest of the thread, and those who didn't know or didn't read the article: This whole thing is happening in the capital of Sao Paolo, not all Brazil. You can be safe turists in the rest of the place.Originally Posted by BHCWarman88

Last paragraph is good
See if they arrest them, they go free or maybe just a slap on the wrists while they knew who arrested them and then either beat the officer if he/she is lucky. So they take the law into thier own hands.."It is the only way to deal with them," says Ednar Souza, a taxi-driver working the unusually quiet streets of downtown on Thursday night. "They don’t care about the courts or prison, which they run. The only way to deal with them is to shoot them."
So controlling the courts may not be for the best of thier future.

The question is: Is this a gang war? Or just a war?

Probably. If it was some kind of revolution I'd guess it would happen in Brasilia, the capital. The police are fighting the gangs, so you could call it a gang war I guess.Originally Posted by Alexanderofmacedon
Interesting how they're targeting the relatives of the gang members. The mafiosi leader Riina was pretty accused of being bloodthirsty for doing that, and was a fearsome figure even in the Sicilian Mafia. The police doing that is quite pathetic, to be honest. Killing the family members? They've done nothing wrong. It's just the police sinking to the level of thugs.

Actually the gang behind it, the PCC, is purportedly strongly left wing. Viva la revolution!Originally Posted by Alexanderofmacedon

Erm, Sao Paolo is not the capital of Brazil, last I heard. I assume the word you're looking for is "Metropolis" or simply "city," which will indicate a particularly urban area with a particularly high concentration and therefore a lot more slums and "bad neighborhood" than usual.Originally Posted by Soulforged

It sprang into my head after reading that police officers were forbidden to buy more ammunition.
Does any context spring into the head over that ?
Like for example police officers being forbidden to have unauthorised weapons and ammunition because of a slight problem with certain officers operating as vigilante death squads ?
Thats amazing isn't it , making sure that officers only have what they are given and making sure they can account for every round they fire , it works wonders if you want to lower the amount of extrajudicial murders being carried out by so called Guardians of the peace .

Would you like a rope to pull yourself out of that hole you've dug yourself into?
Lets see It sprang into my head after reading that police officers were forbidden to buy more ammunition.
Compare to.....Not restriction just upon the police, but restrictions on anybody buying more than a certain (low) amount of ammunition each year.
Oh I see , so not the stronger enforcement of an existing regulation regarding police and their possible use of non issue ammunition due to events in Brasil , but a law regarding the purchase of ammuntion by any citizen with a firearms licence ....hmmmmm...interesting , so please enlighten me ( I know you can , gun -nut weekly must have covered it) what was the outcome of of the referendum on the proposed law amending the bills controling and licencing firearms and their possesion in Brasil ?
It wouldn't have been rejected by any chance would it ?
It can't have been surely as only the US allows its citizens to have firearms doesn't it .
Forget the rope Rabbit , you need a full mining rescue crew to get you out of that hole , but its OK your take on foriegn firearms legislation is really cute , keep 'em coming.
Perhaps foryour next take you can try the draconin firearms laws of Bhutan , it should be easy enough , it has thousands less firearms laws than the US , it should be fairly easy for you to grasp .
