Hi folks.
I've been playing the RTR:PE on both the 1.5 and 1.6 (BI) patch versions recently and it is amasing how much better the AI is in version 1.6.
I had been playing 1.5 as Rome on a vh/h campaign for about ten years and thought it was much better than the 1.2 version and was very happy with the transformation, however I hadn't seen any naval invasions etc etc.
It was only after reading a few posts in the forums over there that I decided to play with the BI.exe to see how the AI was different and boy-oh-boy was I surprised!
Within 3 years of playing as the same faction on the same settings, I had been attacked from both the greek cities and the Gauls and was caught in a fight on both my borders with my armies split. After they had both signed an alliance against me, every time one side attacked so did the other keeping my armies from meeting up.
So i struggled on for a couple of years training new and retraining my existing units, holding off the Gauls in the North whilst concentrating taking the Greek cities apart in the south.
After a few great victories on the battlefield (vast improvements over the AI from 1.5 on the battlefield here too), and just about to take the southern most italian city...BOOM!! One and a half full stack armies landed from main land Greece by sea to beat me back into my provinces!
Luckily for me Macedon soon started war with the Greek cities and their attention was turned away from me. However that was as far as my luck lasted because in the next two years I had been ivaded from sea by the Illyrians, Iberians and yes the mighty Carthaginians all with full stack armies!
Greek ships with fresh stacks on them are now floating around my eastern shores and it is turning into a real nightmare!
I've also been invaded by land, from both the Iberians and Carthaginians, from who knows where! They both came right through Gaul so I imagine they must have took Hannibals legendary route! Couple this with the constant attacks from the Gauls, and you can imagine how much fun I'm having!
I cant expand all that much as I'm fighting alot of defensive battles, and until I can make my cities grow and prosper and I can afford more armies, there isn't much chance that i'm going to be able to expand all that much.
I'm finding it really really hard to deal with everything that is going on in game at the moment, I'm finding it even harder than EB which is surprising to me as I had always found RTR to be the easier of the two (IMO).
It also seems pretty easy to port from 1.5 to 1.6 as far as I can gather from the forums, so I think it might be worth the EB team looking at doing a version for both engines as the AI is so much superior using the BI engine!
Anyow your decision I guess, but I thought I'd give ya the heads up anyway.
Regards
