    Default Game Ratings

    Hey,

What you guys think of Games Having to be Rated?? this Topc Inspired me to post here after I went to the Game Store at the Mall with my Brother on Saturday........

I was Buying a Game Magianze called Gameinformer.. After The Salesman Try to get me to get a 1 year surpscibtion to the Magianze instead of buying one Issue, he finally starting to Scan my Magainze for the price, and I took my momney out and gave it to him.. While he was getting my change and stick my Magainze in a Bag, the Mom and Dad and thier 7 year old kid or so who was waiting behind me,stuck a Rated M Game (M=17 Years old and older),t is called Jaws.. For you People who Saw or Heard of the Famous Movie Called Jaws,to make it Simple,It about Sharks eating People.. So,the game is Rated M for the Gore and ****,of course.. so I walk away and heard the ppl talknig and the Salesman saying "it is Extrlemy Grahpic" and the Partents said "really...?" "yes" "Very Grahpic" and I guess the Game was for the Kid,as I later learn by the head movements at the Kid.. Then The Mom, Ask the DUMBEST Question I EVER Heard, "Does it Eat people?!?!".. Asking if a Sark Eats people,oh my god.. He said "Yes".. it is said People Don't check the Raitings,but...

We don't need Raitings in my mind.. Just Use Common Sense.. RTW for Example, has a Rated T Rating for Violence, but you should expect it from a War game..

you won't give Grand Theif Auto San Andreas to a 7 year old kid,so why give a PS2 game from the Movie Jaws to the kid then??

because San An has sex in it and one of the weapons you can use is a double ended dildo? and also jaws wasn't that scary in my opinion... and i got vice city when i was like 14 and i just found it hilarious although i turned the volume down cos my mum didn't like the language
in england rtw has a rating of 12+ which basically means it isn't recomended for children under 12 which is fair enough because people might not want their children playing on a violent game... but i don't understand the american 'ratings', all i can remember of them is a 'radio ad' on vice city talking about a movie being "rated R, for retarded", could you explain the ratings for me please?

    cheers

    Rated E for Everyone
usally have Mild Violence or something

The Newest One, Rated E10 (10 years old or older)
    dunno

    Rated T for Teens (13+)
    Violence,Blood, Mlid Lanuguae usally

    Rated M for Mature (17+)
    Gore,Blood,Language,Partially Drug Refence,Violence,Partially Nudity,stuff like that..

Rated AO for Adults Only (18+)
Nudtily, and Alot of the stuff I said for Mature

    Rated RP (Rating Pending)
Rating still being looked over by the ESRB..

So What, you might not want your kid to see a Dildo in GTA, but do you want your kid seeing a Shark Tearing the Hell out of the Game Character with Blood and Guts flying all over the place? No,you won't..

(and No,I don't think so, there was a similar topic like this a month or two ago that was here)

Ratings can be a good thing imo. They tell Dick&Jane who barely know how to turn on a VCR what kind of game they're getting for little Billy. Yes, it could be argued that a little common sense is all that is needed, but Dick&Jane probably think games are just for teh kids, and don't even consider something like "adult content" to be possible in a game. They might know Mario and PacMan, not Doom and GTA.

Furthermore, I think ratings should actually be enforced. Not that kids shouldn't be able to play adult rated games, they just shouldn't be able to rent or buy them (although, I would have 14 as the maximum age). Let daddy buy the game for little Billy and let the parents decide what is appropriate and what isn't.

Now of course, rating and the criteria used can be a bit silly, most famously the M and AO ratings in the US, what's the point in differentiating so much between teenagers ? I say a relatively low maximum age should be set, like 14, kids are able to comprehend a 'game' by that point, or they will never. Keep 18 for the porn.

hmm,Bean Made a Nice Point there.. I'm 14 myself, and I know what is Wrong, and What's Right. But With the Names Like Doom or Grand Theif Auto, Dick&Jane going to suspect something.

Heh, grand theft auto probably, Doom, Quake, Unreal, etc. are a little more vague. But for some people all games are simply for kids, and why they might be surprised about the violence they'll consider it okay, because they're just games right ? It's meant for kids right ?

So making a point of actually outlawing the sales of violent games to kids might get the point across that games aren't just for kids, and that some games might even be unsuitable for kids.

Of course, I played Doom when I was 11 or so and consider myself pretty well adjusted, so i don't really have a problem with kids playing violent games. But I really don't want to hear Dick&Jane blaming games when little Billy shoots some prostitutes.

Ratings are good. Kids shouldn't be playing games wich their parents don't think is appropriate, and requiring parents to buy obscene/violent stuff before a kid can get its hands on it makes that easier.

Of course you'll always have some negligent and incompetent parents. Did that mom you mention eventually buy that game for her kid?

    That´s exactly what I think.
When I was younger I bought most games with my parents and they were quite interested in the content(my dad knew computers already, he actually introduced me to computers).
I never really had a problem with that because I wasn´t interested in Gore and sexual content anyway, but if kids are already anticipating new games because of the blood and splatter effects and enjoy killing people, I have two problems with that:

    1. not every kid can discriminate between reality and a game, sometimes 18 year olds do still have problems with that.

    2. I personally have no problem watching blood, brutality and so on anymore, luckily I didn´t experience a lot of violence so far, but when I watch the news and see how some schools are seemingly uncontrollable and kids gang up to beat up other kids for fun and a "nice" video, I really wonder whether it is a good idea to give children access to so much violence.

From what I saw before me and My Brother Left,No,She did not..

And Doc_Bean, Banning sales of GTA and other Violent Video Games is UNFAIR.. Does the Goverment Ban Porn Shows that you can buy in Stores or get on Pay-Per-View?? 10 year old kid could watch a Porn PPV and hide the bill and screw thier partent's bill up.. You see Goverment banning The Showing of NC-17 or Rated R Movies to Young Kids, even though their partents or older Brothers/Sisters can take them to it?? How About Books??Magaines?? I looked at a Playboy Magainae when I was 12,and I got one under my Bed,and you know if I told my Dad that I would get Smack??lol

Well ratings have saved me on quite the occasion from buying horrible games. I don't get and subscriptions or anything, I just stumble on some ratings every once in a while.
