You can change this easily with a simple text edit.
Open up the export_descr_unit.txt and find an infantry unit that you would like for the crew (I chose Botroas). Find what model the unit uses. The name of the model is located next to "soldier".

It certainly isn't perfect, but it is better than the old blue things. I'd suggest trying something with a smaller shield because the botroas' shields bump into each other.
