I just want to address 2 important suggestions.

• Reputation system(members can have reputation based on their posts)

• A new member category(Modder)

The Reputation system is something like a reward for the members. This can stimulate them to post something intelligent, as the quality of posts rises. Also, negative reputation can be added too, for bad posts.

As for the new member category, I suggest this because IMHO the Org has the best modding community of all the Total War forums.
This title shall be given to every special modder.
Suggestions include:

-Duke John
-Myrddraal
-Dol Goldur
-Lt1956
-Epistolary Richard
-Teleklos Archelaou

And the list continues.

I think a reputation system will prove to be more of a hassle than a help as it has such a great potential for abuse.

As to the new category most modders (including the really good ones) link their projects in their sigs, and if their contribution to the community has been great enough many modders have been made (I think anyway) senior members, so it would be redundant to give them this new status as well.

I'd like to mention that we do have a reputation system here already - it works as follows:

- people who make quality posts and are helpful to others develop a 'good' reputation and their opinion becomes more highly regarded;

- people who post mindless drivel develop a 'bad' reputation and others are more likely to ignore them.

What you're really proposing is an artificial points system which attempts to specifically quantify and reflect the amount or otherwise of reputation a person has. Reputation is something that is unquantifiable - it's constantly shifting and the same person will have different reputations in the eys of different people. The inevitable consequence is that there will be an imbalance between actual reputation and these artificial points - and that can't be good for anyone.


As for modders - personally, I'm a great believer of the 'By His Works Shall Ye Know Him' approach. A good modder will become known as such - he doesn't need a special name to mark him out as one. Admittedly, that's harder for modders such as Teleklos who's work goes on buried in within mod teams, but we tend to operate a rather egalitarian community here. I shy away from additional ranks or titles that might have a divisive nature.

That being said, we do have annual Hall of Fame voting which has a lot of modder categories and there is also a modder award (it looks like a small 'edit' button under the avatar) - but admittedly we've not gotten round to giving that out for a while.

The possible implementation of reputation system has been discussed before in this thread. In short, the idea was not that popular because, on other boards, the system was liable to be abused, and often people become very sensitive about their reputation.

The modder-idea has merit, though I think a badge would be more appropriate than a new member class.

I agree with Epistolary Richard. Respect is not quantified by an X amount of stars under your name, it lives in the minds of .org patrons. I can also confirm it's liable to abuse, another forum I used to frequent had a system like this and it turned out ugly.

The modder idea has a little more merit, but it would be better to accomplish this via the HoF system, wich it is supposed to be doing anyway.

Although, an alternative to a 'rep' system could be the 'thanks' system they have at Facepunch Studios (home of Garry's Mod for HL2). Everytime someone says something, and you believe it to be helpful, you press the thanks button. There is no negative button, only a plus button.

Wouldn't that make you feel great if all you got was thanks? Sure would make me happy!

We've actually investigated a 'Thanks' system not too long ago as I agree it would be a nice feature. After our forum technicians gave it a close inspection, however, they concluded that it would slow down the forums to a significant degree.

I'm afraid, then, if you want to thank someone for a post you'll just have to say it in a post!

If people stick to an area to post, they will quickly get known.

And one person's "quality" post is another one's drivel, especially if the point of view is not popular.

I would say that the system may not be ideal if people require sufficient exposure to different forums to be promoted, with the assumption that the more mods who are aware of one's existence the better - but I think it is a minor point.
