The game does look great, I just hope that it doesn't get boring when you reach the galactic scale.

It's old news, but it still rocks. Can't wait for it to be finished, regardless of how long it takes.

I just saw the link on reddit.com today. How old is that clip, does anyone know?

I love the concept, and what I saw of the execution in the video looks amazing. EVERY single element in this game will have to be equally good for it to work, and those are long odds.... considering how ambitious this is. But I hope they can pull it off. I will definitely buy this, if it lives up to the hype.

It's from the people who made the Sims, so at least they'll have enough money to throw at it

It looks like a cool game, although I wonder how fast it would drain my 10Gb a month download limit...

SA? who? what? when? why? and a few other words that begin with a "w".

Well I hope the part in wich your creature evolves doesn't go to fast cause that's the part I like the most. I think a player must also be able to chose when the next stage comes and I think that you're creatures should only be able to evolve within a certain amount everytime. I don't hope the game will be like:
poof a cell, poof a whale, poof a monky, poof a tribe of monkys poof a galaxy of monkys. I really hope that the evolution part of the game doesn't go to fast. Since I really think that that part would be the most fun part.
I wonder how it handles all the information. I mean the pc will have to calculate, process and store so much data. I wonder what specs you'll need to have.

btw: sorry for posting at the frontroom, I was just blown away.

Oh yeah! Some genuine innovation going on here! I myself can't wait for this game to come out - I just found out about it, and already look forward to it more than any new game.

    Oh man!

Every time it evolved to a new level I found myself going "WOW!"

I really loved the Death Star action. Hehehe... I thought he would just put a vulcano in the city, but that was even better.

This is truly revolutionary. I mean listening for other races? Simple yet really cool.
Giving your tribe some things, a drum and then they dance with their little spears around the campfire. And the editor of the creatures... MAN! I can go on. Every aspect of the game was just highly intereting, ok perhaps not the bacteria stage but still it had it's lure with the editor.

Hey, hey, don't turn this into a backroom thread.

The thing about Spore that personally attracts me is the way the game figures out how to make your creatures walk, and the fact everything is customisable. The way your species, buildings and vehicles look, everything. So cool...

When this thing comes out, my man-eating civilisation of arachnids shall assemble a maginificent space fleet and destroy you all!

    Heil Arachnia!

Myeah. Personally 'the RPG/RTS creature building stage' attracts me more than the galactic UFO thingie. For some reason I can't wait to design a hunchback-creature and give it a spoon.

Looks like a game worthy of my eyes.

Hahaha... So let think this over so we can gain an edge of these guys. How is it going to play out? We be God?

I really want to create a centaur-like creature, or perhaps even a raptor or mantis style (that would be so damn cool).

This is the 'extended' video from the Spore presentation, it doesn't include any new gameplay footage but it has a 12 minute intro by Will Wright about why procedural techniques are way cool. I found it interesting, it's his vision on the future of computer games (in a way).

This game looks amazing. Holy crud though, Will Wright says "Ummm" like 1000 times! That guy is pretty dam good at what he does and you can tell he's intelligent despite umming a lot.

I'm looking forward to this game a lot. The evolution in the game actually is somewhat closer to ID than science but conscious interference for a player is what makes a game fun so I don't really care a bit. I hope to spend a lot of time in the animal stages of the game too. I'd love to make a large sea creature that then shrinks and gets onto land or whatever. The game doesn't look like it supports mullusks and maybe not flying creatures. I think that would be awsome if it did. Imagine making a race of giant slugs that conquer the universe. Also making a species of intelligent plants might be ver interesting too but the game is pretty expansive as it is and I won't harp at its limitations. It looks groundbreaking.

    Thanks for the link Doc_Bean.

This is the intelligent design version... you are playing God and making them evolve along a line to intelligence.

Evolution would be each creature has its editor randomly manipulated, eventually something better would come along that could spawn more copies of itself... rinse and repeat a million times and then it becomes a multicellullar creature.

A game of Evolution would make a great screensaver as it would require no player interaction.

Looks like it is too ambitious for it's own good, it will probably end up like like a series of gimmicks. If they can make it a tight overall package, way to go, but I wouldn't count on it.

Depends on how competitive it can be played... it would be interesting if there were other players at all levels that you could either compete with or help (symbiosis)...

Yeah, it sounds like a master server grabs the designs you've created on your hard drive, and stuffs that into a master database. Then when you need an AI opponent (you climb out of the ocean, or discover another planet), the game grabs a design (at random?) from this database and starts running it.

That is a way cool idea.... although I don't know if there is any vetting for quality of the design. People vary in their creativity, and there could be a lot of really bad designs out there. But maybe the random quality makes up for it? You'd never know if your next AI opponent would be something really cool and nasty in an "Alien" kind of way, or a giant pink fluffy bunny, or a sentient Taco with extra hot sauce... or.....
