Thread: How to get a general's stats higher?

Default How to get a general's stats higher?

And by stats I mean: Management, Influence, Command and Loyalty.

The easiest thing to get is Command, and that is I know how to get, but what about the others? I only know how to get Influence through the 'Victor' vice.

I'd appreciate it if the SP-experts would enlighten us a bit.

P.S. I'm sure this kind of questions has been answered a lot, but too scattered for a good source.
P.S.S. In all my campaigns I go around fine enough with the Command stats and the Influence for 1 general at the most, is having high Influence/Management for your generals worth the micro-management that might need?

Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."

Management: you can aquire if you build academies and set taxes to anything above ''high''.

Influence: being a faction leader, or heir helps. A position in the senate also raises your influence. And usually if you conquer a lot of land, you're character 'll likely raise his influence level. Diplomats can raise influence by being a productive diplomat, they can also lose influence if they don't make any good deals.

Loyalty....that's a hard one....I'd say that refusing bribes 'll make a character increase in loyalty, other than that I don 't really know. Sometimes giving generals to large of an army reduces Loyalty, they might get some fancy ideas you know....

I find that once you're beginning to dominate the world, management, influence and command ratings always move down on my priority list. I usually groom one general and try to get him to raise his stats, just for the fun of it.
In the beginning, when cash, armies and land are in a somewhat more worrying state, I do tend to keep more of an eye on my generals. As said, as time progresses, I tend to concentrate on a few ''favorite'' generals.

Yes but, do you find the 'Management' rating good enough to worth it's trouble? And really, just getting an academy would give me 8 and 10 Management generals?

Well in the early game one might consider trying to level up a characters management level, for better trade revenues, in short : for cash.
In the early game it might not be wise to construct an academy, instead go for tax-raising, that tends to work a bit better when you really want that next barracks built ASAP.

Building the academy line of buildings is a costly project, and should only be done in one of your core cities, IE Rome, and not in some backwater province where it might be conquered by some rampaging horde.

The Academy line doesn't give say...a plus one management rating to any general in that city, instead it increases the chance of a general in that city aquire-ing ( sp ?_) management boosting traits. You'll most definitely get some administrative geniuses in your city with a Ludus Magna, if you leave a general in the city for a while.

Also, don't forget to put your high management generals in your trade cities, they'll be of a lot more use over there, than in some newly conquered city.

All in all, I deem management to become increasingly less important as the game progresses. If you keep an eye on your finances in the early stages of the game, you'll find you can't spend enough as it is later on in the game...

Another way of getting able governors - management wise - is grooming one general to say... a 10 scroll management rating .... and then get him to marry and start producing children, who, as their father before them, know how to get the locals to give you their money. of course this isn't the best strategy you could employ, but it is possible to do I guess.

10 management general.. O-o! The most I ever got was 3..

That deserves a sole campaign I think. Thanks for your help.

    Command:

Command is by far the easiest ability to grow. Simply, fight battles and win them. It is easier done with a HA faction if you know how to use HA, because then through HA, you will be able to win battles of a 5:1 ratio, and the harder the ratio is, the greater your general will become. One good thing to do when it comes to command is killing Roman Eagles, after killing around 4-6 eagles, you will have +3 command from that alone.. Sadly, your general can't have more than 10 command stars that take effect. Also, as a HA player, you get the Good Cavalry Commander and Good Attacker traits usually, adding up to 4 command points + 3 from eagles, and 4 from other vices. Good luck, and have fun.

Traits are easy to acquire if you really set your heart on getting a particular general's attributes up.

For Management and Influence I´d use ancilliaries, and try to avoid gaining vices. Actually gaining improvements in those traits is hard and all too often dependant on luck, though less than in MTW.
