Yes, there has been quite a hype. Especially in the school system, attempts to "educate" us about drugs and how bad they are. I probably learnt more about how to get them and use them, than about staying away from them.
The media is very apt at blowing things way out of proportion.

It is the problem with politicians trying to coherantly defend the laws that are currently in place. Substances that are legal are so much more addictive and deadly than some of those that are not, authorities tie themselves in knots trying to square this circle.
Better, saner laws would allow a coherant message on such topics.
