"Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."
Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton.
A few things to note. The campaign is still rolling along at its own pace. There are usually two or three battles per turn. Because our generals are spread all over the world, online at different times, there are usually delays of several hours between battles. On average, I'd say that we have one to two battles in a 24 hour period, depending on who gets into a fight and when. That works out to a pretty slow average progress rate, but there isn't much that can be done. The good news is that we have entered Autumn 261, which, according to my calculations, leaves us with three turns to go.
Now, I haven't been writing a continuously updated report as during the first half-term. The reason for this is it felt kinda silly during a major war, like something a reporter would do rather than a general. I'd rather write it in the style of a good old-fashioned after-action report. In the meantime, you have a steady stream of battle reports to keep you amused.
We have acquired a new general, however. This guy:
He married Placidia, daughter of Tiberius Coruncanius. He's in Pella right now.
Βασιλεοπατωρ Ισαακιος Κομνηνος
Basileopator Isaakios Komnenos
(Save Elberhard)
Well a slower pace was to be expected I suppose, as the turns get longer and the battles more frequent. And as you mentioned, the time zone differences aren't exactly helping either.
I am happy a new general popped up, as I am currently not represented since my other avatar, Marcus Laevinius, died in battle.
Now I'm not aware of other Lower house members without an avatar, or for that matter Upper house members, so will I be represented in the senate - perhaps in battle - by Flavius Pacuvius ?
Also just to let you all know, I've recently installed the RTRPE 1.6 version and will in the near future probably install all of the other sub-mods which we are using this PBM. In short, it means that I may at some point decide to move down a house.

Actually, this PBM is running on RTRPE 1.5. It won't work with a 1.6 install.Originally Posted by Dutch_guy

If a person proposing such a policy wins, there should be fewer battles and the term should go faster.
By the way, what about later on? Each turn will take an age when we, perhaps, face the Selucids. Also, when we have around fifty regions like I do in my Hard campaign, the surrounding AI will start to be more aggressive towards you even on hard. The only bordering factions not at war with me have only got one bordering region, namely Germania, the Ptolemaioi and Iberia.

OK, I'll assign you that chap. I hope you do move to the Lower House. As PBM vet, there's no reason to sit this one out. I doubt you'll regret installing the mod, it's very good.Originally Posted by Dutch_guy

Feel free to use it.

Ah, I see. Now I guess there's no way I could easily (without having to uninstall every 1.6 file) delete the 1.6 patch - and install the 1.5 one, or is there ?Originally Posted by Tincow
Ok thanks for assigning me the avatar, thus far I haven't regretted installing the 1.6 version so I doubt the 1.5 version 'll turn me off.Originally Posted by Econ21

About the install: Do I have to install it on a fresh RTW folder as opposed to a BI folder to get the right files? And am I a Legate yet by the way?

Hiya folks,
Back on the forum in time for the upcoming elections thanks to the timely assistance of FLYdude, econ21 and Ser Clegane. Gratitude and muchos kudos to all of you !
Dutch_guy, there is no easy way to downgrade from RTR 1.6 to RTR 1.5. I recommend a reinstall.
Tiberius, great work on the sig !
x-dANGEr, welcome back in the lower house !
Do we still have any people without avatars and/or wanting to ditch a spy/diplomat? If so, this guy was recently adopted by Quintus Naevius:
Also, welcome back, DDW.

Hey folks, just found out about this and it's the greatest thing I've ever seen around here! Like a dream come true. Hope to join soon... however having a bit of a problem. I just downloaded all the files from Rapishare, but when I try to unzip it says file is invalid or corrupted. Any ideas? All the other files and everything besides the zip one are there too. And when I get it working, how exactly do I join in the fun? I know in the FAQ it said to post in the "in-character" threads, but not quite sure which one that is or how to go about it.

Well first you'll need to decide if you really want to play the game, which I take it you will since you're installing the game. So that means you'll join the Lower house, if you merely wish to observe and comment - I.e a more passive role - you should join the Upper house.
An Avatar will be assigned to you either way, which will represent you both in the game and in the senate. Even without an avatar one can comment and vote on motions and propose them. The voting and proposing of motions happens in the in-character thread.
And since you were wondering what and where the in-character thread was :
Here it is.
Hope I managed to clear it all up, it really isn't as difficult as I might have made it seem
* be sure not to make the same mistake I did, we're playing with the 1.5 patch, not the 1.6 one.

Wonderful, thanks. So in the Senate Deliberations thread, I just announce my arrival and choice of Lower or Upper House? I don't know how I'd do it in-character though, as I don't have a character/avatar...
Hiya Wonderland (* checks sky for UFOs *),
I think you are making a mistake in the unzipping process.
It is actually one (1) big zip file split into many parts. You need only unzip the file marked .zip (senate.zip) and it will unzip the other files.
So just select the senate.zip file, right-click, and select ''extract to...'' and create a senate folder (or whatever).
I hope you join the lower house as we can always use more generals![]()
But you are of course welcome in any capacity. Econ21 will fix you up shortly.
Oh, I'll definately be joining the Lower House. However, I'm not completely clear on how everything works just yet, but I've been looking around the threads and stuff to try and get a handle on things. I must say, everything is incredible. The Senate Library, battle reports, everything. I'm awestruck, this is excellent stuff. I can't wait to be a part of it!
As far as the zip goes, I did it correctly, it's just the download was corrupted I guess because of the virus blocker or whatnot. I'll redownload the stuff with it turned off and hopefully it'll be fine.
*edit*
Hmm, looks like I might be Cornelius Saturninus eh? How apt, freshly adopted/newly joined.

Well, Publius Laevinus, shifty157's avatar got into a battle with a significant Gallic force at the ford. The problem is that it appears that shifty hasn't been active at the org for the past two days and not been active in this PBM in quite a while. Need some opinions here. Should I, a) ask shifty if he still wants to fight battles (could cause a delay as he hasn't been around), b) autoresolve (could cause a defeat as the Gallic force is big), or c) find someone else to play the battle, like GeneralHankerchief, for example, whose avatar has a lot of (rather boring) learning to do before getting to command an army.

It's a bridge battle, right? Should be easy, and I need the practice. If shifty isn't around I'll take it.
And welcome to the PBM, Wonderland!![]()

I would like to respect the Upper House/Lower House distinction. I think we should contact Shifty157. If he does not play the battle within 48 hours of being contacted, I'll move him to the Upper House and GeneralHankerchief can fight the battle on his behalf. In the latter eventuality, Publius Laevinus should then be moved to a governorship and the avatar of a Lower House member assigned the defence of the Massila ford.
Well, that's reasonable. It could cause my term to drag on for yet a little further, but I don't have a problem with that. Will you contact shifty or shall I?

Wait a sec, shouldn't we be sticking with the rules of the game?
The previous substitution which econ21 played was different since the actual player in charge of that avatar asked someone else to take over for just that one battle due to technical problems. This situation seems to fall right into our agreed upon rules though. I think we should give shifty157 the required 2 days to play it or otherwise respond, and then the battle has to be autoresolved.7) Battles with faction members can be fought manually if the avatar is controlled by a member of the Lower House who plays out the battle within 2 days, otherwise they are autoresolved.
If a defeat results, it would then be entirely appropriate for the Senate to be rather harsh and critical of him. In fact, the repurcussions of failing to play a battle in time could turn out to be very nasty if the Senate decides to be vindictive. Regardless, I think we should obey the rules, for better or for worse.
Um... I downloaded again, still corrupted. The other links to download the files from the RTR forums don't work because that whole place is down. It seems the gods don't want me to partake in the conquest of the world. Is there anywhere else I can download the necessary files? Maybe whoever put them up can check if there's anything wrong with them?
Oh, and I already have the RTPE 1.4 installer and 1.5 patch, so I guess I only need the other smaller files that are required. I just wanted to redownload just in case it wasn't exactly the same as the one I had, but I guess it's not necessary. If someone could just upload the other files I guess that'd be quicker and simpler and I'll try and see if the save game works.

Fair enough. Rules are rules, and besides, this will finally get the Senate all worked up again.
Wonderland: The downloads should be fine, as I did it successfully last week. Did you rename any of the files? If you did, make sure to name them back as that killed me. When unzipping, only do the smallest file (as DDW said, it was senate.zip- NOT the z01, etc). This is the last one on the list in the FAQ.
(I know this is pretty much the same info DDW gave, just trying to put it in a different way)

I think TinCow is right and it would be best to stick to the rules. I have a hunch Shifty will come through, but if not, the Republic is big enough to take the knock.
FLYdude - can you contact Shifty please? Cheers.![]()
I did it correctly for sure, but the same thing happened both times. Invalid or corrupted... The first time I downloaded through a download accelerator and thought that might have been the problem. Second time I downloaded from RapidGet, the rapidshare program for downloading. I'm going to try and download it a third time now with the standard download manager of my browser and hope something happens differently. Is there any way someone else could try and download and see if it works? I know noone has to and it's an unecessary hassle, but it'd help to figure out if it's just me or there's something actually wrong with the download. Anyhoo, I'll edit this post after downloading again to update.
*edit*
No luck. Something has to be screwey with the download. Is there absolutely anything I'm missing? I have senate z01-z06, plus the Senate zip file. I put all the files in the same folder, didn't rename anything, thier all in order. I try to unzip the Senate zip file and it gives me the error message. Anything I'm doing wrong? I tried just dragging the files out of the zip file too, no go. I right-clicked, unzip, nothing. I double click and do it that way, still error. I've never had a problem with zip files or with rapidshare downloads before. I hope somebody else tries this out soon to see what's going on.
In the meanwhile, isn't there any other location I can download the 2 submods and the little text fixes? Could someone upload them since they're relatively small files and I already have the main RTPE 1.4 and 1.5 patch?
*edit*
I looked in the RTR section at the TWC and there were the Metropolis and Naval mods, but they're for RTPE 1.6, not 1.5. Will that be fine? Also, there's apparently a RTPE 1.7 coming out soon, how come this game is being played on 1.5 still? The patches aren't save-game compatible I assume?
*edit*
I was just going through my RTW mods folder and I discovered that I also have the Metropolis and Naval mod. It's for RTPE 1.5 but it doesn't say which build it is so I can see if it's the one this game is using, which the FAQ says is 1.4. In any case, if someone could just post up the only remaining thing I need, the landblock files or whatnot, I can try and see if the savegame works, then everything can be hunky dory. However, if the Rapidshare problem is solved, that'd probably be best to ensure everything is correct. Buuuttt, I think it'd also be great if the correct version of the M&N mod could be uploaded as well...
Oh phooey, I've been hating myself more and more these past two days with all these posts and problems. I really do feel horrible and sorry for the inconvenience everyone.

Which files do you need? I have just now uploaded the Metro/Naval mod v1.4 onto the Orgs PBM uploader - I had to zip it and span it over three files due to the uploaders size limits on files.Originally Posted by Wonderland

Is there anything else you need? (You are right that we are locked into Platinumn 1.5 because of savegame compatibility issues.)
Thanks so much econ, I appreciate it. I believe that's all I need, I'll download these right now and try out the save file.
*edit*
Oh, sweet lord... the same thing is happening.... invalid or corrupted. The landlock one works but the M&N doesn't. I would assume it's something wrong with my unzipper or downloading, but I just downloaded some other zip files and all is well. Any ideas?
Last edited by Dooz; 07-27-2006 at 11:59.
Are you using winZip ? If not, download it and try that. The problem might be your unzipper.Originally Posted by Wonderland
Nah, I don't think it's the unzipping program, like I said it works fine with everything else. However, since the landblock files worked and I had the others I just tried it out and it works. The savegame econ posted works too, but again I'm not sure if the M&N mod is the version 1.4. But in any case, it's working now and if I can download the correct version later I will.
