I sought only the good of Rome, and I now admit that even my most eloquent efforts have failed to convince the Gallic tribes of the benefits of Roman civilization. However, I fear that by giving the Germanic tribes the fertile land of Northern Gaul, which is very fertile indeed, may cause them to desire more, and thus cause them to invade us in want of more.
