    Default Today's the day

At 6pm I will be sworn in as a 2nd lieutenant in the army reserve. Then July 2 it's off to basic training followed by platoon leader training at a later date, as yet TBD.

So, wish me luck. I'm probably going to need it, as I think I may well be the oldest 2nd john in the Canadian army.

Good luck, Goofball! Joining the army when you are old may be tough - IMO youngsters are much more capable of putting up with crap. My father and uncle are twins - one did his national service at 18 and thought it was a great adventure; the other postponed until he was 21 and hated it. I'm guessing you're a little older than 21 , but the point may still hold.

Forgive my curiosity, but what is the story behind you joining the Canadian Reserve? Is it voluntary? Part time? How big a commitment is it? In the UK we have the army proper and then the Territorial Army who are kind of weekend soldiers, but can see action, especially if they are specialists. What is the Canadian reserve?

Best of luck. Do not expect anything being given, I recently became the equivalent of a lieutenant and it is hard. You are responsible for the lives of your group, but your people usually come through for you. Always trust your people.

36 (in August) actually. But I have a small advantage in that I was a private in the regular army when I was younger, so I at least know what to expect.

It's pretty much the same as the Brit Territorial Army or the U.S. National Guard. It's voluntary, and part time; I think the average commitment works out to roughly 1 evening/week and 1 weekend/month (aside from additional training/taskings). I decided to join up again mainly because I enjoyed it when I was in before, and wanted to give it another go.

Thanks, PJ. I probably won't be able to post at all during basic, but after that life will be back to normal again.

And thank you to everybody else for your good wishes and advice...

Crap. Just saw this. Outstanding! *applause* The Cannuks need all the good officers they can get (just as any service).
