    Default The European Tragedey

    http://www.tcsdaily.com/article.aspx?id=012705D

This article was very good and confirms my sucspsion
    • The articles talks of how using a child as a "saftey blanket" to keep the family farm or name is no longer needed. However this alone does account for the sheer drop in population
"In terms of intergenerational solidarity, the importance of the child as
an investment for material support in old age has been limited by the
social security and pension insurance system, which has eliminated
people's immediate dependence on children. The importance of the child's role in relation to its parents has transferred to the emotional sphere, which reduced the direct material indispensability of children in a family, while also allowing for them being replaced with certain substitutes
    bringing emotional satisfaction."
    • In the above quote it talks about emotinoal satisfaction. This could be anything but before modern times it was a child. The popualtion of dog owners in Europe has skyrockted among young professionals as it brings the same kind of satisfaction with much less work and pressure than a child
"It is virtually impossible to make a living. Just take Rome. Life with a
minimum of human dignity (a small rented apartment, occasional dinner in
a restaurant) requires a monthly pay of 3,000 euros before taxation, which accounts for some 1,800 euros after tax. If in the Anglo-Saxon world a majority of adults is expected to live an independent life on their own salaries, in Italy this is often not the case. An incredible 70 percent of unmarried Italians aged between 25 and 29 live with their parents, where they
benefit from subsidized housing and where their poor incomes amount to
    a handsome pocket money."
    • In America and Europe cripling taxes have turned out to be a double edged sword raping the middle class without much to show. Along with that pensionos and extensive welfare systems in Europe are another reason why child bearing has taken a backseat.
    • 25% of Europes youth is unemployed agian cuasinig the derailment. I of course have a soultion lower taxes by cutting studnet benifts and some pension and welfare and force the younglins to get jobs start a carrer and have a family
    • Of course what would a thread on European population be without our good friends the moslems. With large amounts of immgraents streaming into Eurpoe (250,000 a year in Germany) who tend to have more chilfren the demography of Europe will change dramaticlly. A vigourus young moslem population (many with strong ties to there homeland and devoutness that would make Fred Phelps blush) will quickly over take an aging white population. We will see Notre Dame cathadrel become a grand mosuqe.
    • This also means the EUs dream of becoming a 3rd superpower will fail and there economic and miltary status will not be close to that of China or the USA (who has a birth rate comparble to a devopling country)
    • Taxes are the key if we can change the tax structure in Europe the dominoes will fall and Europe will be saved. If not bye-bye culture and tourism. Hello a slow suffcating death.

The article is also incredibly biased towards a right-wing agenda for a US audience to feel superior.

It's a good job the US of A doesn't have an immigration problem with its demographics, ain't it?

If it's a choice between having the problem of pedro protesting downtown with a sign that says "let me be a citizen of your country so I can work and pay taxes and not have to worry about being deported" or abdul with a sign that says "mutilate those who insult islam", I'll take Pedro.

    Have fun with Abdul.

We already have far more people per square mile, there's just less room in Europe. Where's the tragedy ?

I'm curious of this as well, depopulation is a common trait in most highly developed western societies, which is probably one of the reasons of increased immigration.

However, the article does raise some interesting points ... nothing new, mind you, but something usually overlooked, namely the part of the 'safety blanket' as you called it.

If I could chose, I would rather worry were I get money for gas than were I get money to pay my children's education.

I have a question. If much of Europes youth is unemployed why is there such a need for immagrants?

Its al little bit misleading to say that... For instance, here in Ireland we have extremely HIGH employment. Europe is a collection of 25 different countries. Its not very easy to make a statement that fits most of them, forget all of them.

AFAIK employment isn't really a problem, if you're willing to work 'lower' jobs, unemployment is usually either due to lack of willingness to work (a lot of people hang around for a year or more after HS if they don't go to college) or because they are looking for a 'good' job, in line with their degree. It might be the European mentality of wanting to work for one company for the rest of their lives (if there are still people like that around) that keeps some people from excepting the first job they can get. But really, I don't know anyone who has had any real problems getting a job.

Also if you're going for a higher level job, it might take weeks or even months of interviews/tests before you know wether you're in or not.

The real problem in Europe, imo, is all the old people retiring at 50 and living off the state. Since there are a lot of old people here...

Hence why the EU is such a bad idea. To imagine that one monetry policy fits so many different countries is ridiculous.

    Two things:
The U.K. has unemployment of around 5% (that only counts those claiming unemployment benefit, there are therefore many more without work who don't claim benefits, claim incapacity benefit etc), not full employmeny by any measure.
Migrant communities often have much higher unemployment rates in the U.K.

So in answer to your question, I don't know.

    The article is rather biased.

    For example:
The practice of having children and newlyweds live at their parents' domicile is a custom you can see throughout the region. It has been a part of Mediterranean culture since the Middle Ages. To link it to socialism is ignorant at best, disingenuous at worst.

100 % employment is not managable for any country (if only for the reason that no new jobs can be created)
A nation usually is considered to have full employment when it's around 94%

does that mean 94% of the potential workforce not claiming unemployment specific benefits or does that mean 94% of the potential workforce in work?

Because in the U.K it is the former.

Edit: and I thought that opinion amongst economists varied from between roughly 93 and 98% rather than a set 94%

Hides a lot, doesn't it? All those young minds doing courses purely to waste 3 more years. And people that haven't enough NI contributions to get the allowance. And probably loads of others as well.
Without the City of London and the financial companies there, England would be in dire straits.

The conclusion is that we have only a few hundred years left to integrate immigrants.
