This is for George Bush 88-91 president.
It used to be very rare to name a ship after living person but now it seems they are going to start a new standard to name them after a former president while they are still alive.
I understand the reasoning behind Ronald Reagan, as it was under his term of office that the Navy was at its largest since WWII.
Next in line (to be commissioned ~ 2015) is the USS Gerald Ford
So if they are to keep with the "new" tradition next should be USS William Jefferson Clinton and then another aircraft carrier the USS george Bush.

"No New Taxes"? That would be rather silly, considering the taxes that went to build it. Oh well. Maybe just "Read My Lips" would work. Oh, oh! I know! How about one from his campaign slogans when running against Ronnie Rayguns in 1980 before he did an about face and flip-flopped his way into the vice presidency! The ship motto can be "Voodoo Economics!" That's the winner. Where are our taxes? No you see them, now you don't!

Isn't this a bit lame? No disrespect to George Bush Sn but warships should have macho, exciting names like Invincible, or Destructicator (that one's for Dubya).

I think it's a little odd to name ships after living people. Let some time pass, let history start to make its judgement, and then stick their names on boats. Look what happened in Rome when they stopped deifying dead emperors, and started calling the live ones Gods. Same principle.

The only saving grace to this is that Bush Sr. has actually piloted a plane from a carrier during wartime. Clinton, Shrub, and any other politician should not have ships named for them. Warship names should either be historic (Enterprise, Constitution), named for dead famous naval heroes, naval battles, or after cities and states. Stroking the ego of living politicians is just wrong.
Slightly off topic, I always thought it was deliciously ironic that Clemencau (French leader during WW1) thought that planes were and would always be useless in war, and that they later named an aircraft carrier after him

Is it just me or I think we have far more than enough of the Nimitz-class supercarriers already to waste yet another billions on another one? 
Besides, methinks--okay, I *think*--a Nimitz is getting a lil' too old to be starting new ones by the 21th century anyway. I'm sure the American military could've come up with something newer and shinier than a giant aircraft carrier. Or darker, if we're talking about those cute billion-dollars stealth ships.

The X ships are actually rather interesting. They're designed to be modular and use off-the-shelf technology. The loadouts are designed to come in what look like stacks of railroad cars. They can switch out various configurations quickly and easily, eliminating the need for a large number of different classes of ships. Instead they have one ship which can carry out a variety of missions based on the modular loadout. Pretty freaking clever, really.

I toally agree with you Lemur on this. It is repugnant to me that this obvious brown noser is recommending such a thing. Talk about vanity! Well, there is at least one thing about George Herbert Walker Bush that is different from his son, at least he did actually serve on active duty during an actual war and was actually fired upon by a real enemy. Good analogy about the "Deification" of the Roman emporors. I guess the Bush family may want us to think of them in the same way. Impossible, but what the heck?
PS: Is that a fully integrated crew on that sub? If it is the USS Clinton then their must be a contigent of....oops! Don't ask me 'cause I cain't tell!

As for your points about the Bush family, well, part of the reason I'd like to wait until someone is safely dead is so that we can get some perspective on these things. Then we can decide if we want a USS Nixon or a USS Carter, or better yet, neither.
