When and how do you think the world will end?

Talking about this use to scare the hell outa' me, but now it just doesn't bother me, it interest me more than it scares me now...I'm curious.



Well when and how do you think our world will end?





I think it will happen as predicted in the bible. And that it will happen in the next 50 years. (probably in my life time).

There are signs that the end times are around the corner according to the bible. (i haven't read revelations for awhile so I am a little hazy.....help me out and bare with me)

Bigger natural disasters then usual (tsunamis and global warming)

pandemics and famines (bird flu, aids, and starving africans...take your pick)

A big war and chaos..... the war on terror, while it really isn't to bad right now....I think it will get worse.

..............................

and other stuff that is cause for alarm.


The history channel had a thing about an Irish monk who predicted all the popes until the end of the world.....he was right and there is one left.

nostradamus thought the world will end in around our time. As did the mayans.

And the bible code is right from what I have seen. it predicts either 2028 or 2012 as the end of the world (can't remember which)

plus all the technology we have.....

RFID chips could be planted into you and used as credit cards (mark of the beast anyone?)

And all the people wanting globalazation.... I guarantee you the anti christ will have something to do with the UN.

This is just off the top of my head. If I dug into it like I used I guarantee you I could find more




I use to be really into studying this sorta' thing (to satisfy my morbid curiosity) but I been outa' the loop a while. I've saw enough documentaries and read enough stuff to put it all together but I can't remember all of it now

Well how do you think the world will end? meteors, nukes, global warming, like I said? how? Oh, and feel free to tear my idea apart.

There have been a lot of different sources (Maya, Buddhist, scientists, etc.) saying something's going to happen on the Winter Solstice in 2012. What that is exactly, I'm not sure. But something will end then.

Because there is supposed to be an army of jews and christians who've repented and go to war with the anti christ. I'd imagine they get into heaven

And if you die before the end of the world....you can get into purgatory....I am not catholic and as far as I know purgatory is a catholic thing but there are a lot of decent people who are not christians and I can't imagine them being throw down to hell with the murderers and rapist

I was going to say when the sun starts its end life cycle, but Papewaio beat me to it.

Now if you mean when will it end for all life on the planet, the above is the most probably event which will cause it.

The world ending for humans will likely happen much sooner. The most statistically likely event to end life for humans but not for life altogether is a supervolcano eruption, like the one under Yellowstone or several others. After that, a strike by a comet or asteroid of sufficient size to kill us is also likely.

Then there's us killing ourselves off, which can't be estimated statistically, it's either going to happen or we're going to get wiser. Frankly I find the wiser option unlikely considering other posts in this thread. Events in that category include polluting the oceans enough to kill off the blue-green algae together with clear-cutting the rain forests enough that we choke off the two sources which together account for most of our oxygen supply. Another possibility is a Permian extinction-type event started with global warming raising the ocean temperatures enough (about 4-5 degrees C) to cause the frozen methane deposits to begin rapid gas expansion and an interaction with the warm sea water, which would then release enough methane (one of the worst greenhouse gases) to raise the temperature another 4-5C. A total 10C raise in average temps would be enough to turn the entire agricultural belt from 60 N to 60 S into a Sahara-like desert - ending us through starvation. The Permian extinction wiped out 90% of all life on the planet.

As for Buddhists, Mayans and scientists being lumped together into a group all saying the world will end on the Winter Solstice in 2012, I'm afraid I'll have to ask for some cites and proof that scientists should be included in that group, General Handerchief. Scientists don't put dates like that on such things. Including scientists in the grouping makes me very skeptical.

Actually no, Ceasar010. Just in general, people focusing on a coming religious end-of-the-world tend not to worry about real things that could actually end the world, or at least end life of humans. And in the case of the things we could actually do something about, like abrupt climate change from human-activity related global warming or polluting the oceans and such, the true believers don't care enough to affect the necessary changes which could stop these things from happening. And then it ends up becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Believing in the Apocalypse is fine, but helping it come about through inaction seems rather irreligious to me.

Oh, and I don't think you're crazy. Misguided maybe, or perhaps uninformed and unscientificl but not crazy. Crazy people are the ones who know better and cause problems anyway, like the "scientists" funded by the oil companies who, just for greed, cast just enough doubt on real science through bad logic and bad science to allow the true believers to ignore reality.

I think science will be part of my prediction if it comes to pass. Like the part about yellow stone erupting, I think that will be one of the natural disasters. And there is a big part of an island (can't remember the name, if anyone knows help me out here) thats is supposed to fall off and cause tsunami. Think about it there all sorts of disasters that scientist think are right around the corner.

Although there is one thing that will keep my prediction from happening. Islam...I am serious. Revelations says that the anti christ will tear down the dome of rock and build his own temple there; there is no way in hell that's happening and we all know why.


And then again I could be completely wrong! Every generation has people that think the rapture is just around the corner. Present enough evidence that I am wrong and you could probably sway me. Convince me all the different event I've put together are not related at all.

You're talking, I think, about the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. A large portion of the western side of a volcano there, Cumbre Vieja, could possibly break off and slide into the sea. As for the rest, my concern is that an attitude that human-caused ecological disasters are part of an Apocalyptic End Times view causes people to ignore that fact that such man-made disaster are preventable. It seems to me that doing nothing to mitigate the causes because it's somehow ordained by God to happen is about as silly as it gets. If it's preventable then it isn't inevitable. If it isn't inevitable, then how could it possibly be pre-ordained?

What is it about the end of the world that people find so comforting? I have a relative, who shall remain unnamed, who pops up with apocalypse predictions like clockwork. SHe really ought to change churches -- all of this doomsday fever and fervor can't be good for her.

You might want to peruse A Brief History of the Apocalypse, which chronicles some of the end-time predictions starting in 2800 B.C. and moving through 1700 A.D.

People have been predicting the end of the world for a long time. Why, I'm not really sure. Does anybody have a theory as to why this is so popular, and has been for at least the last five millennia?

My pet theory is that it has to do with our own mortality. Many people just can't stand the thought that after they're dead and buried others will be around living and enjoying themselves. So they cheer for an apocalypse to keep that from happening.

The world and the universe will end once a sect of monks in the Himalayas completes the list of The Nine Billion Names of God*.

People have been predicting about the end of the world for a long time. I don't think anyone will find out. Jesus said that the ed of the world would be unexpected, like a thief in the night: "Be ready for my coming at any time!". For those scientific and rational people, I think the world is starting to enter the early phase of the next Ice Age. Basically the events you see in the "Day After Tomorrow" are actually possible, event-wise, not time-wise. These events will happen over the course of thousands of years. So that might be considered as the 'end' of the world but humans survived the last major Ice Age so I think we will.

If the end of the world is coming, I blame it on us humans.

Although the tsunami was a major disaster, it's hardly in the size of being an obvious sign of the end of the world. And the disasters predicted to be related with global warming is going a more dragged out process. As for the many large potential disaters scientists have found out, they could happen "soon", that is within about a few million years.

Except for AIDS, the pandemic front is quite silent atm, but stastically it will come a larger one within a few decades. But as with famines, it's a regular phenomena that has always plagued humanity. Nothing unusual there.

Currently, the war on terror will not lead to any major wars and certainly not a WWIII. The situation can change, but after all, it always will.

That monk wrote, as usual, in quite cryptic and unsystematic terms and quite a bit of the explanations of the terms is clearly hushed. And as with Nostradamus, they're almost never right when predicting the future choise of popes with that. Nostradamus' works is generally even more cryptic and even harder to interpret. And most doomsayers said 2000 before that date, now it's 2012...
For the Mayans, Aztecs and that Buddhist sect, it's the end of one age and the beginning of another, possibly. The Mayans for example mention dates far after 2012, hardly needed if it's the end of the world, is it?

And I'm very curious how a ideologic movement that wants humanity to become one single community (aka humans first, nationality second) and that every human is supposed to get a good life, is evil? Have I teared it apart enough or do you want me to continue?

My guess is that to wipe out humanity, you'll need a nuclear war or a meteor. And "preferbly" with a combination of pandemies, massive natural disasters, etc added to that. It requires less to wipe out more than 90% of the population though.

Edit: And for the paranoia note. I'll need to post my 2012:th post in here, as my 2000:th seems to have ended up here. I mean two doomsday years in the same thread about the doomsday...

Put it this way, if you were an MTW general your stats would go something like "-6 morale, -50% happiness, -6 acumen, -6 command, +10 piety"

The end is not nigh. The Earth has at least til the sun goes nova or red giant or whatever; Life as a whole will pull through whatever happens before then(though not necessarily as we know it now, Jim); and Mankind will probably survive too. Civilisation may not.

But whatever happens it will be on a Thursday, round about teatime.

I believe the same as you but I´m not sure when it will be.
The signs are there, but I´m not too sure because even the early Christians said Jesus will come soon and thought their times were really bad.
Then again, if the bible is correct, Jesus will come when noone expects him, so one should always be prepared.

Concerning the bible code, I´m not sure, it predicted a nuclear war for this year IIRC, but I cannot see where that fits with the book of revelation, but I have to say I don´t dig into these things because I won´t be able to change them anyway.

Let´s not forget if you run into a car tomorrow, that´s YOUR personal end of the world...

Well speaking as to the world in its entirety; its crust, mantle, core, etc. then I think it's safe to say the sun will eventually do the job.

Speaking with regard to our world, as in that which concerns all life then my money's on a big rock doing the dirty deed. In the last billion years or so big rocks have had a nasty habit of intefering with evolutionary progress on our planet.


Speaking of which, a big rock is scheduled to miss us come July 3rd. Supposedly it's a about a half mile in diameter and will come almost as close as the Moon's average distance to the Earth. Too close for comfort eh?

Well, since we'd be dead ... there's not much point in caring. The thing is, the ball of dirt would remain, and possinly a very few animals and plants, but, for the most part, anything that can actually wipe out humanity, can pretty much wipe out the entire planet along with us.

My own bet is on humans doing their thing and destroying as much as can be. It is doubtful that pretty much anything we do will wipe out the speices, but it is most certainly likely to wipe out civilization and force us to start over ... except with less resources.

And unless that something happens very soon (and by that I mean a century or two), humans will most definitely survive, but perhaps not on Earth.

In oooh about an hour, to make room for a hyperspace expressway.

My birth certificate has an expiration date so I know when mine will end but as for the rest of you, the minute I remove my tinfoil hat… or if I forget to turn the lights off and on 13 times before I leave the house.

the earth will probably end when the Sun runs out of energy, if it behaves like other stars it will grow in size and consume the earth during this.

Not that there will be anyone around to see this.....we will have made this planet unnabitable with polution millenia before that
