    Default Sid Barrett RIP

The Frontroom mourns the passing of a rock legend.

    My favorite picture of Sid.

Thanks for the memories, then and now.

I'm bringing out the old Wish You Were Here album tonight.

When you think about it, a lot of Floyd masterpieces came directly because of Syd. Every Floyd fan, even one who doesn't like Piper owes it to him to inspiring such work.

Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
you piper, you prisoner, and shine

    Rest in peace, Syd.

Like I said previously, this one had me crying. Audibly. This is by far the most painful famous death of late for me.

    Oh, where are you, now? Pussy-willow, who smiled on this leaf;
When I was alone, you promised a stone from your heart.

My head kissed the ground; I was half the way down, treading the sand, please...
Please lift a hand, and only a person whose armbands beat on his hands hang tall~
    Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?

    The poppy bird's way swing twigs coffe brands around;
Brandish her wand with a feathery tongue.

My head kissed the ground; I was half the way down...
    Treading the sand, please~
Please lift a hand, I'm only a person, with eskimo chain, I tattoed my brain all the way~

    Won't you miss me?

    Rest in peace, Syd.
I actually had to sell my both copies (CD and LP) of Wish, because I suddenly found that I despised it. The whole thing struck me as an overly pretentious, wholly inappropriate piece. If they had really wanted to salute Syd, they would have one a sequel to Piper.

Well, had they done a sequel to Piper they would have been blasted by the critics for moving back to the Atom Heart Mother era or so. The Floyd probably wanted the best of both worlds in a good tribute to Syd as well as something that would satisfy the rest of them in terms of direction.

And I don't find Wish inappropriate at all. It's pretty much the band saying their final farewell to their founder and friend. One part near the end of Shine On p.2 (Part 8 or 9 to be exact) sounds like a very weird, psychadelic funeral march that he probably would have approved had he been still making music at that point. And you can hear a bit of See Emily Play near the very end (of course, that might just be me imagining things).

Finally, judging by your tastes in music you must like Wish better than the next few albums the Floyd came out with (heck, probably all of them).

Then I envy you. You have a wonderful discovery in front of you if you wish to make it.

I'd love to be in a position to hear Syd's music again for the first time.

I see your opinion; I was just voicing mine.

And no; frankly, I didn't like anything they did after Dark Side. It just stops sounding origional to me.

Start at the beginning. Pink Floyd's first album; The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

Syd's music had lots of imagination, and (what someone else described as) charm and simplicity.

    So long, Syd

Back in the 70s as a punk I was obliged to hate the Floyd, but one day someone played "See Emily Play" for me. Okay I was a little under the influence at the time, but apparently I loved it so much I made them play it seven times in a row. That song is so fey, still gives me the flutters.

Anyway, it got me into Floyd.

I heard the terrible news on the radio yesterday; I pulled over in my van and sat reflecting on those memories of Syd, early Floyd, Piper, The Madcap Laughs. Music can be very grateful that a pure genius like Syd came along.
Such a sad, tragic story of a diamond that shone brilliantly but far too briefly.

    Enjoy your gig Syd

Never heard of him. I've heard of Pink Floyd but never listen to their music.

Wow, I just read Wikipedia bio on him, didn't know he became a recluse.
