Newbie myself, but welcome to the org.
I agree with you: to abandon provinces without a fight is just not done, even if it would make things a lot easier, I will never leave my territories without a good fight! And if someone manages to take one of my territories, I'll go after them until the entire faction has been destroyed! Even if I have to change my entire planning on the strategic map. Ask those damn Vandals who dared to take Campus Frisii from my Saxon Empire lately... They are all exterminated and their skulls
decorate my tables now. HA !
