    Default 2 GB; Worth Getting?

sometime in RTW mp i asked people how much RAM they had. one of them said 2 gb. he said its like lagless. (with 2 gb of ram) so is that true? is 2GB of RAM worth getting compared to 1GB of RAM? (that i have)

Furthering this question: what should be specs of a computer that would best utilize 2gb of ram; in terms of motherboard, processor etc.

2Gb for RTW is definitely not worth getting. Maybe for MTW-2. RTW itself in sp/mp doesn't seem to take more than 512Mb.

Believe me it does Orangat.. I used to have long 'loading' times, and they are much less with 1 G (I first started with 256, which was SLOW. Then 512 which was fine. And now 1 G which is cool. Though, keep in mind I play with GFX to none and size to Normal).

Depends where the bottleneck in your system is

No it does not. 2Gb would be grossly wastely just for RTW.

I've found through my own tests that RTW does not take more than 512Mb at the most in SP/MP with 12,000 men. Normal SP campaign will probably never exceed a 384Mb footprint. Tack on another 200k for the kernel and tsrs and maximum memory requirement is only around 700Mb.

Post the peak commit charge if you have proof.

I recently upgraded to 1 GB of RAM and it makes a world of difference to games such as oblivion and battlefield 2. I've only played Rome briefly since I got the RAM but that seems to be running very smoothly. I can't imagine getting 2 GB would be a bad thing as you are more likely to be able to play next-gen games. It depends on your price range. As for finding out how much RAM you are able to get and what motherboard you have; any documentation you got with the computer might help. I recieved a manual for my chipset with my pc which details the motherboards capabilties. If you don't mind opening up the computer then many of your answers should be answered in there.

Also make sure that any new RAM modules are identical to each other and the ones that are already there. This means that the type and density are the same. I don't know whether the manufacturer has to be the same but I've heard that there may be compatability issues if they're not (though mine work fine).

ive used a different "type" of a 512 RAM but it still works.

I doubt 2 GB is gonna do anything in RTW. I have only seen it use around 5-600 MB tops. Only a few games use 2 GB AFAIK.

    I didn't see a noticeable increase when I went from 1GB to 2.

As long as it works, thats the main thing. It just said in my motherboard manual that the same type and density was recommended. I doubt there would be a problem if, for example, two pc 2700s were used in one channel and 2 pc 3200s in the other. Its if you mix them around that there may be issues. However I'm no expert on this. What I do know is that the RAM will function at the speed of the slowest module. So in the case of a mix of pc 2700 and pc 3200 the speed of the RAM will be pc 2700. It therefore makes more sense either to spend less; on all pc 2700s, or more; on all pc 3200s.

Which makes 1GB very worthwhile. Especially since most users have other processes running that are neither kernel nor game. Given RAM prices, I would go ahead and get 2GB, but that's just on general principles; it wouldn't benefit RTW directly.

I didn't say he should. I simply said 512 to 1024 makes a BIG difference.. (You know, when you play the game, especially in MP, you tend to have Skype, TS, x-fire, fraps, WMP, etc.. on!)

Did I ever say 1Gb wouldn't be worthwhile?

This is what I said in my 1st post :-
"2Gb for RTW is definitely not worth getting. Maybe for MTW-2. RTW itself in sp/mp doesn't seem to take more than 512Mb."

RTW by itself (not counting the kernel and tsrs) does not seem to go over 512Mb. So 2Gb would be wasteful.

Did I say that you hadn't? You know, Orangat, decaf has much the same flavor and zest as fully caffeinated coffee.

that helps a bit. btw uping 512 to 1 GB does make a differecne. before the game lags quite a bit in city assaults. now it runs much more smoother.

Spartan, I suggest you wait till you get the 2 GB.. (I only upgrade RAM when I feel I need it.. Like, last 3 weeks my PC with 512 MBs was dying, so I got a gig..)
