    Default Off to Kosovo

    Hi, everybody.

I recieved orders this morning informing me I'm off to Kosovo for 18 months in two weeks. Even though I haven't been on as much recently, I wanted to say adios to my fellow Orgahs before I mobilise with my new unit and also ask for a bit of advice.

This whole region's history has fascinated me sort of passively over the last couple years. Can any of you knowledgable Orgahs point me in the direction of a good book or two about the area? I'm looking for something somewhat cursory since I only have a layprole's knowledge, and maybe move onto something more in-depth afterwards. I'm pretty excited about going and checking out the atmosphere of the place, and would really appreciate some good literature to enhance it.

    Thanks in advance!

'fraid I can't help on the literary side of things, but good luck regardless! It's a beautiful region.

Two weeks notice huh? Not very nice of them. I've never been there myself and those I know that have weren't there for the scenery.

That does seem fairly short notice for such a long stay, but that's probably par for the course right?

    Good luck!

Hey Pro, good luck first of all. I don't expect you'll be doing much, Kosovo's rather stable afaik, but have fun. I can't point you torwards a book or anything, but I can point you to the movie "Savior" with Dennis Quaid. It's definatly fiction, but from what I've seen on the History and Military Channels, and what I've read and whatnot, alot of the backround and what's going on typifies the region's history for the last two decades or so (although the movie takes place in Bosnia, not Kosovo, it still has an affect I think). In any case, best wishes and I hope you find the book you are looking for.

It is really annoying that they gave me so little notice, but I have known for a couple weeks that I would be going somewhere, sometime. Pretty sure the most exciting thing I will do is get to yell at Privates that no, their hang over doesn't exclude them from running during PT and then some first aid medicine for the locals.

I take it you are in the military then? Well, keep your head down, look after your mates, and come back in one piece. Take care, and be safe.

Good luck! I can't recommend any biblio but having friends and their relatives from that region (as well as Macedonia) I can say that the people are usually hospitable, warm blooded yet stubborn and appearing harsh in social relations. (The cuisine isn't everybody's favourite. )

    Take care!

    I'll give you some advice:

Don't divert your humvee from patrol to go eat at pubs that are on the unsecured border of a hostile area, and leave your weapons in the truck, because thats how you get your ass smacked around and captured, and then you and your two buddies get to pose for a photo and have it all over international press like asshats while Bill Clinton whines for your release while trying to sound tough.

    Just some advice though

One of my buddies was over there three years ago. I don't know what the situation is now but when he was there he said there's still pot shots taken at the UN forces (assuming you're UN peacekeeper).

Keep your head down, don't let peace and quiet deter your vigilance and be nice to the locals, but not too friendly...no matter what he looks like.

Stage one we say nothing is going to happen.
Stage two, we say something may be about to happen, but we should do nothing about it.
Stage three, we say that maybe we should do something about it, but there's nothing we can do.
Stage four, we say maybe there was something we could have done, but it's too late now.

Good-looking people have an advantage in life, so females can also prefer other good-loking females to hang out with or to be friendly to as long as they don´t feel competition.
