There are guides for about five different factions. They give you a good idea what to expect when starting a game. There is also an "EB vs. RTW" guide to help you understand the differences between the vanilla version and EB.

These will help you get off to a better start with EB. It's frustrating to step right in and suddenly be 20000 in the hole if you aren't paying attention within just a year. But if you take a look at one of the guides, you'll understand better what choices need to be made early on and you'll probably enjoy it all a lot more.
