    Default Fish dance abandoned

THERE was outrage and sadness in a Dorset fishing town yesterday as locals mourned the death of a cherished tradition, killed off after complaints from animal rights activists.

There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

I can't say it's a cultural loss, but it does all seem a bit petty. There's always some lonely person who will interfere in other's fun on a 'moral' kick, but the real downside here is that the RNLI ran scared.

What's next to be banned from their fund-raising - baked bean baths after protests from the Vegan Popular Front (Flatulence Armed Wing)?

(And I thought immediately of the Fish Dance sketch too - does that make us sad or just old?)

I'm surprised that they were cowed by a single, anonymous threat. They should have stuck two fingers up in the time-honoured English tradition.

Ken Whetlor, the Mayor of Lyme Regis, pointed out that the conger eels used werecaught accidentally in fisherman’s nets and frozen for the event. “The writer of that letter is a gutless troublemaker with nothing better to do than stop people enjoying an innocent event that helps to raise money to save lives,” he said.
Darn straight. BTW, what's the RNLI? Royal Navy something-or-other?

The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England cannot enter – all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement! - William Pitt the Elder

Ah, well. All good things come to an end. It'll be funny if they figure out who wrote the letter, though.
