Default It's that man again - how do we solve a problem like the Pope

In my current Sicilian campaign - see

    https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=65937

I have run into something with the Pope I have never come across before. I have a crusade marker ready, but every time I go to place it, the message comes up that the Pope will not allow me any crusades currently. The target - the recently excommed Spanish or the Russkis are valid. The relevant provinces come up with the lilac colour when I pick up the marker, but when I place it, I get the message.

2 more points - Islamic provinces come up as red and I am currently under an excomm warning - which I am obeying - about agression against the English.

As an aside, the English warning is quite ironic as I was in conflict with them as a result of my crusades against him when he was recently excommed. During that time I was also attacked by the Spanish and Hungary who were not excommed - in fact I was attacked by the Pope in Tuscany aided by the Spanish!! Then the Pope dies, England are back in the fold and almost immediately, I am warned and the Spanish and HRE are both Excommed. but, heh, that's MTW for you!!

This message comes up when you try to crusade, but you're in war with a Pope. Try to end war with a Pope, you'll be able to crusade then.

Might be quite difficult.... in my HRE game I had to resort to cheating (via -ian, then took control of the Pope and sent a bishop with a peace offer ) to end the neverending conflict, which was actually a perpetual stand-off with a power relation like 10-1 in my favour.... It is quite deplorable that assassinating the Pope doesn't end the state of war with him, but then again, it doesn't with other factions, either.

I quite like the ability to use "-ian" to step into the other countries shoes occasionally to try and stop them from daft wars with regional superpowers (me usually )...I sometimes try and sort out their, sometimes rather random, production schedules too...more peasants...Nooooooo!

One of the more anoying parts of MTW is the programmes fixation with "providing opposition" to the player rather than trying to have the other states act in their own best interests!

I don't mind them ganging up when I am trying to conquer the world but I do quite enjoy having a medium sized empire and then watching the world evolve around me to see how it affects my neo-roman (or whoever) domain...

    1. Take the Pope down to his last province.
    2. Force him to retreat to his castle.
    3. Leave the province the next turn.
    Auto-peace.

Yes but be careful. I tried doing that but my guns took him out before his unit panicked and fled.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.
