If you look at someones xfire when they playing RTW online it shows an I.P address. Thats the I.P address of the gamespy server. Can you use a server that don't belong to gamespy but one you own yourself.

Hmm I don't think you can.

Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."

The game checks your cd-key against a database when you log into Gamespy. Creative Assembly doesn't program direct ip play into the game because that would bypass the cd-key checking system they use. We all know it's possible to create a cd-key checking system for game that uses direct ip play because other games do it, but Creative Assembly either doesn't know how to do it or they don't want to put the time into changing their cd-key checking system. What I don't understand is why they bother with an extra cd-key checking system that's in addition to the cd check that's done when you startup the game because they have used the excuse that multiplayer is such a small fraction of their sales that it's not worth a lot of time and effort to fix problems with the multiplayer. If multiplayer is a small fraction of the sales, why bother being so restrictive about internet play? They act like it's their bread and butter while they say it isn't. It's inconsistent behavior like this that makes me think they are not being candid with the players about the choices they make.

As the saying goes it's to stop the honest thieves. They can't make a game have no security and expect not to lose sales.

Anyways for the topic. I thought there was a server for Shogun but, then again, that's a different version in the totalwar series.

As for the legal side I don't think CA/Sega has anything against a personal server although if won't run on a non gamespy server due to the CD-key issue, then it cant be done legally.

Edit: Oh I should add that you should check with Sega or CA first as they'd be the ones to know for sure. Also read the EULA thoroughly if it does'nt say anything about hosting your own server, then there is a lot less they can do about it.

When a fox kills your chickens, do you kill the pigs for seeing what happened? No you go out and hunt the fox.

The game has security. It has the cd check. There is more going on here with the additional cd-key check than security. They could do that cd-key check and still allow direct ip play. For some reason they want to force multiplayer to use the GameSpy server. If the GameSpy software server is shutdown, internet multiplayer will stop. The problem is that once sales of the game drop below a certain amount, it's no longer profitable for the publisher to keep the server running. Since there is no direct ip play, all internet play of that game stops even if there are still people playing it online.

Yes there is for Shogun. The server software was written by a community member after the official server was shutdown.
