Laptop For Impoverished Student

Having recently had my 19th Birthday, I have now aquired enough dosh to buy what I hope would be a mid-range (leaning towards higher spec) laptop. Ideally it could stretch to games such as RTW, but I would settle for less... Anyways I have a saving of £600 (my limit) and I live in the UK. So my plea is: does anyone know what would be my best purchase in that price range? Like I said it would be great if I could get a reasonable gaming machine, but I'm not expecting a miracle. Ta in advance for advice.

Gaming laptops tend to be expensive. What you should look out for is a proper graphics card - no integrated Intel rubbish.

If you've done any work on a desktop, you'll find building a white-box notebook to be easy. Plus it should save you enough to allow a halfway-decent graphics setup for gaming.

Thanks Geezer57, the idea of building my own laptop does really interest me, both for the novelty and the potential savings. I'll look into it more closely, but I I wonder if the savings are so high as to make the effort worthwhile? Also, are specialist laptop components (such as laptop CD drives) readily available? Could be interesting though, especially as i have a few weeks before term time starts again...

First of all, Happy Birthday Masy.

On topic, the idea of building your own notebook is probably the best option. It saves you serious money, plus you can choose your own parts, not some integrated Intel rubbish. I suggest this, though it might not please you: Stay away from gaming laptops. Even though they are portable, they are no match for a desktop.

So, I'd say look for a good PC or make the notebook powerful for your studies. Plus, you can save some cash too.
