If they died in the collapse in the morning, and the press (kept properly away from the inside) and 'rescuers' came shortly thereafter, the bodies wouldn't be stiff.The body starts to stiffen after 2 to 6 hours. I cannot really seem to find lapse of time between collapse and rescue attempts, but in your quote it is stated that the rescue was started very late, so there seems to be plenty of time for rigor mortis to start affecting the body.
