Well I hope they put back the 'squeezed too tight penalty' for men in melee who don't have 1 meter of space, and the 'range calculation and LOS' for individual men when shooting. The effect of rain on ranged units also seems to be missing, and it's not clear if cavalry suffer a combat penaly when fighting in trees. All these features were in the STW/MTW battle engine.
and a COMBAT penalty for surrounded/outflanked units, not just a morale penalty.

I realise this is not the place this discussion but I have to disagree with that one as it is an unnecessary abstraction give that the engine deals with individual soldiers and their fighting skills and penalizes them individually for attacks to the rear and flanks, but if they turn and face why should they have a combat penalty (individually)? I just think the engine is detailed enough not require this kind of abstraction.

On subject, I like the videos and the impression of "attention to the details" it gives the project as a whole...

first of all, if you know the enemy is all around you, causing a morale drop, this will certainly have an effect on your fighting performance.
next to that, battles were often "pushing contests", with both lines trying to push over/break through the enemy line. Spear armed units probably relied more on this then sword armed units, but it's true for all soldier types. Thus, if you are surrounded, you lose much of the support from the ranks in your back, resulting in decreased combat performance.

First thing, the videos were great... I hope everything lives up to the hype.

Second as for the debate about penalties for being surrounded and outflanked I'm in total agreement. I think it brings back a degree of realism to medieval warfare as competent generals did everything they could to manuever around enemies and to avoid being outflanked themselves. I just watched a show called Decisive Battles detailing the battle at Cannae where this was clearly the case. Hannibal manuevered his line so that the Romans couldn't resist the temptation to try and smash it with their sheer numbers but Hannibal flanked the Romans to their sides and their rear and decimated them. Flanking allowed an army of 20,000 to utterly destroy an army of over 50,000... and this was not like the Romans defeating neighboring outclassed Barbarians, the Carthaginians and the Romans had professional fighting men and organized armies.

Pulling moves like this made MTW the game that it was because you could use your ingenuity, guile and daring to defeat greater and more powerful armies.

I thought it was funny to see the target kick on the door and break the assassin's nose. I chuckled hartily. I think those movies were very well done. The spy one also made me laff.

Yuuki, its most likely too late to suggest any stat parameters to the developers now. If they haven't changed the stat issues prior to this stage of development I doubt they will later on. I wouldn't be surprised if they leave them out....sadly.
